Granville SMITH Obituary

Our Hall of Famer July 18 1921- July 9 2020 Always encouraging, positive and ready to help. Granny was a mentor, coach and friend. He grew up in St. Paul during the Great Depression, was called up to the Army Air Corps in 1943, graduated from Hamline in 1945, taught for 38 years and coached baseball for 32 years at Park/Cottage Grove High School, and was a long time member of Newport Lutheran Church. Married to Janet, the love of his life, for 68 years. Survived by Janet, daughter Robin (Tom), sons Craig (Liz) and Brad (Marie) and grandchildren Patrick, Andrew, David, Hannah and Ezra. Preceded in death by son Joel, his parents, and brothers Bob and Bill. Thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Nelson, Dad's long time GP, and to the wonderful staff at Norris Square, Cottage Grove for their loving care. A celebration of Granny's life to be held at a later date.

Uncle Buv was my favorite Uncle. One year in school I was having difficulty in a class, Uncle Buv spent 3 weeks with me to get through it. When going back to school in the fall, I was one of the top 2 in my class. I enjoyed spending time at Uncle Buv and Aunt Janets house, especially her good cooking. He not only coached kids in baseball but their school work as well. He had a nick name for me. It was PUNK. I will always cherish the many memories of my family and yours being together as kids. Our love to Aunt Janet, Robin, Craig and Brad and their families.

Granny was a core member of our Mens Bible study group at Newport Lutheran Church. We discussed all aspects of life and death. Granny always approached the discussion with wisdom, knowledge, humility and love. I always enjoyed our discussions and I know Granny is swinging his bat in a better place. RIP my friend......

Granny will be missed by my wife, Kay and I. Kay babysat for Granny and Janet and was a student of Grannys in high school. I was fortunate to be a colleague of Granny at Park High School where we shared a lifelong friendship. What made Granny so special was his care for family, friends and students. Granny followed his students and players careers as they moved on from high school, always sending a note to recognize an accomplishment or a word of inspiration when needed. Kay and I will miss him dearly but will have many wonderful memories of our times together. Granny was one in a million.

Granny will be missed by us all. Neighbors while I was still in High School, think I babysat a few times. Appreciated Granny and Janet keeping an eye on my Mom after my Dad Passed. Truly a great person, teacher, friend, role model for so many.

It was my honor to play for and Captain his 1968 team. Coach Smith was a student of the game who stressed fundamentals. I have always respected his commitment to the game and his players. R.I.P. Coach
