Gregory Seftick Obituary

Much Loved Son, Brother and Friend, Age 31 Died during the night of April 16 - 17 in an avalanche in the beautiful Teton Mountains. He touched many lives and packed a lot of living into his 31 years. Preceded in death by grandparents, Michael and Jane Seftick, Merrill Hanson, and Michael Drazich. Survived by the love of his life, Megan Webb; parents, Dan and Sue Seftick; brother, Chris (aka Topher); grandmother, Dorothy Drazich; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Greg was born and raised in Afton. He was a 1998 graduate of Stillwater High School, a 2002 graduate of St. Olaf College, and a 2007 graduate of the U of MN Medical School. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at West Virginia University Hospitals, Morgantown, in 2010. After serving as an attending physician at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon, WV, for 8 months, he moved to Columbia Falls, MT, to be closer to his beloved Rocky Mountains. Greg was passionate about music, medicine, and the mountains. His love of music often led to long road trips to Phish, Yonder, and Widespread shows. We watched with admiration as his medical knowledge and skill increased and his ability to teach others developed. Greg was honored with the Resident Excellence in Teaching Award as a Third Year resident. But nothing matched his love for the mountains. He felt more comfortable skinning up and skiing a couloir, climbing ice, or solving a rock problem, than navigating any city street system. He was an experienced backcountry skier and mountaineer. He died with his friend, Walker Kuhl, doing what he loved most. Our thanks to the dedicated staff and volunteers at Grand Teton National Park who found Greg and Walker on April 24. Funeral Service Monday, 11:00 A.M. at GUARDIAN ANGELS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 8260 4TH St. N., Oakdale. Visitation Sunday (TODAY), 4-8 P.M. at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 2800 Curve Crest Boulevard (NW corner of Hwy 36 & Co Rd 5), Stillwater, as well as one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred. 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., Stillwater 651-439-5511

I was extremely saddened to hear of this news. You don't know me but Greg stayed with a friend of mine in one of my apartments in Chamonix a couple of years ago. It really struck me what a great guy he was, fun, easy to talk to, so passionate about the mountains, and something very caring and gentle about his manner. Needless to say we shared some good times and laughs, a beer or two, on and off the mountain and became a good little group of friends for that short period of time. Strangely (not having already read his obituary) he popped into my head a few days ago and I again thought about how nice it was to have met him. I am extremely sorry for your loss and wish you all the best in this difficult time. Siobhan (Chamonix, France)

I feel like I have come to know Greg a bit through his family during the search at Grand Teton's. His spirit of adventure and love of the wild seems to shine through. My thoughts are with his family and friends at losing him too early. I am sure he will always be watching over them,as he continues his journey.

Sue and Dan,
My heart is just aching for you upon the loss of your dear boy, Greg. I just think of all of us as young mothers talking about raising our kids and picture Greg and Chris as little guys. It's so enjoyable to read about Greg's life and what a wonderful beloved person he had become yet this is such a hard loss for you. You are surely in my prayers. Thank you for all you did for me along the way and the prayers for Dina throughout high school and college. I do hope I'll get to see you sometime when I am in MN.

I don't know if I ever thanked Greg, somehow he got away with doing all the dissecting in science class because I was too grossed out. It might sound silly, but it's just one of the reasons he was the nicest guy in school. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Rest in peace Greg.

Dan and Sue,
I worked with Greg during his residency at West Virginia University. It was always a great pleasure to know that he was on shift. He was incredibly thoughtful and energetic. As a former Minnesotan, I felt a bit of a kindred spirit with Greg. He is remembered fondly and will be greatly missed.
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dan, Sue, and Chris

In the short time we spent talking during the search and in meeting you in Grand Teton, it became obvious you are very kind and caring people. I can only imagine that Greg possessed the same characteristics. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you.

Dan and Sue,

My deepest heartfelt condolences are with you and your family. I never met Greg, but having worked with Dan and recently met Sue, I know he was a heck of a son, brother and friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you and may Greg rest in peace.

I worked with Greg when he was one of our doctors in the emergency dept. at St. Joseph's Hospital in WV! He was such a compassionate doctor and person. So genuinely nice. He called his co-workers by name and i always liked that he cared enough to remember our names instead of "hey u in x-ray!"! He was always telling us his outdoor adventure stories when there was down time, and it was obvious that skiing and what not was what really made him happy! Well that and South Park!!! I am so honored to have known and worked with Greg! I'll never forget the going away party we took him on and how much fun all of us had with our friend Greg!!! I hope he knows how much we all cared about him! We miss you!!! Enjoy those Moutains up there buddy!

I only knew Greg for a short time. I first met him when he began working in the emergency department at St. Joseph's hospital. However, he was one of those people, that when you get to know him, you feel like you've known him forever. He was a great doctor with a wonderful fun-loving personality. He loved his mountains. When there was downtime in the ED, he would sometimes go on-line and look at the mountains he had already climbed, or hoped to experience. Greg had passion. Many people go through life having never experienced such a love for something they enjoy.
We were sad to see him leave St. Joe's, and yet we still sent him off in style, fulfilling our tradition of saran-wrapping his car on his last shift, and throwing him a bittersweet going away party.
I enjoyed knowing Greg and am honored to call him friend. I trust he is in a better place, doing what he loved. He is missed!

I only met Greg a year or so ago when he began working in the emergency department here in West Virginia, but in that short time he became a great friend. He was great to work with as a doctor and a friend. It was nice to see someone so passionate about there job. I can see how he put that passion in everything he attempted, climbing, skiing, medicine...even entertaining us with his quotes from South Park...(verbatim)..... making us laugh til we cried. We had a great going away party on his last shift with us...I'll never forget the fun we all had! I don't think he realized until that night, what an impression he had made on us. I'm gonna miss you friend...continue your adventures!!!!
