To Peggy, Mary, Margie, Jenny, Chuck and the rest of the West family;
Margie and others were kind enough to let me know about your recent loss of Howard. The years have passed by, but I still feel a special fondness for the West family.
Peggy - you and Howard welcomed me into your home as a timid teenager from St. Cloud. I remember Howard coming home from work, giving me perspectives and words of wisdom - commonly during the evening news - with a martini (or was it a manhatten?) in hand. Your home on 8th Ave SE had such character to me - a value which I still enjoy as we live in an old home here in Ogden.
I remember fondly the trips to Hayward...meeting 'Mae' West...., the West dairy....the 'barn' dances where I first learned to polka, etc, etc.
You two were strong, Catholic role models. Now as a parent myself I can only somewhat appreciate the challenge of raising nine children during the 60's and 70's --- and what a diverse group of free-thinking, firmly-grounded children you have given the world!
Howard was so kind to me as a long-haired teenager interested in his daughter. I remember one occasion
when we were golfing with the boys at the Pierz golf course. It was the first time I had ever set foot on a golf course. I was wheeling Howard's clubs around with one of those hand carts....and he was instructing me on some of the fine points of the game. I remember early in the day, as we were approaching one of the greens, I decided to take a 'short cut' with the cart, and cruised right across the middle of the green. (a typical, impulsive, totally out-to-lunch teenage move!)Howard was kind, but straight-forward in his instructions to me about the etiquette and rules of golf!!!
So I have fond memories of those years....The world is a different place when we lose a spouse or parent. We certainly move on, yet there is a bit of emptiness....a void which I hope can be partially filled with wonderful memories of his life.....
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.....

To the whole West family, but particularly Mary and Margaret.
I want to extend my sympathy on the death of your father. Although I am sure I only met him a couple of times when he was visiting, dropping off, or picking up people from St. Ben's High School, I do know that he was loved by his children. What greater gift is there than that? My prayers are with you.

Mom and all West "kids",
almost 17 years ago I started to call Howard West "Dad". I am very proud to be his son-in-law, and happy to be part of your family. I will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
