I am Mark Thompson and one of my former students (Mai Bao Vang) just called to tell me that Jan St. Martin had died. I am so sad. She was a great lady and had a big impact on my life and on the life of my students.

It was in 2004 or 2005 when Jan came to Como Park Elementary School and wanted to volunteer with our brand new Hmong students. She was assigned to my class and faithfully came to help at least twice a week. She had a gift of connecting to kids and she was able to communicate with these kids, many of whom could speak hardly any English. She especially connected with the Vang family and adopted this family as one that she could help the most. The Vang family had come from Thailand in 2004 and needed much help. Dad was afflicted with some medical problems and required hospitalization and home care. Jan, with her nursing background, was able to give advice and was careful to watch over his condition and encourage him to get treatment when necessary. Jan was there with gifts at every birthday, at Christmas and at other special times. She helped the family financially and always was there to buy school supplies at the beginning of every school year. And she continued to reach out to the Vang family. Mai Bao Vang told me today how proud Jan was of her recent college graduation.

Jan stopped volunteering at Como in 2007 or so but I stayed in touch with her through the Vang family and also because she volunteered at Lyngblomsten, where my mother was a resident. It was always good to see her. She was so positive and so caring. What an inspiration!

In the summer of 2005 she nominated me for the Star Teacher of the Year award sponsored by the US Department of Education and I was blessed to have been named Minnesota Teacher of the Year. What a difference that made in my life! It was a great honor and I was so appreciative for Jan nominating me and for helping me achieve what I did.

We have indeed lost a saint! She will be missed and remembered. I have a sad heart today and hope that the family has some consolation knowing the impact Jan has made on so many lives.
