John WANGSNESS Obituary

Age 75 of North Oaks Died on November 6, 2018 Many things came effortlessly to John – a certain grace on a ski slope; recalling the details of World War II battles; a talent for gab. But his generosity of spirit and unwavering kindness to his family, friends, colleagues and patients will always be his most extraordinary gifts. Joining his wife, Mary, in the great beyond, the pair will resume their rituals of lakeside strolls, waltzing in the garage and baking apple pies. John is survived by his daughters, Jessica (Luke) Bellville & Kristen (Michael) Latimore; grandson, Alexander; and brothers, Marlin & Dean. Preceded in death by wife, Mary; and parents, Otto & Florence. Memorial service 11AM (visitation 10AM) on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at HOLCOMB-HENRY-BOOM-PURCELL, 515 Hwy 96 W., Shoreview. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Twin Cities PBS.

As a fellow physician I worked with John on many patients. He was well liked by all of my patients. When my mother-in-law, in her 80s, developed lung cancer I thought that it was terminal. But through his expertise she had radiation and gentle chemo and was cured! It was a bit of a miracle thanks to John. She lived several productive years after her cure. I wish that all of my consultants had been and knowledgeable and kind as he was.

As a primary care physician I referred patients to John from 1977 until I retired in 2016. Patients really liked him. He was a competent compassionate physician. He treated my mother in law for lung cancer at age 88 and she was cured! When I was getting chemo myself 4 years ago he sometimes dropped in the the infusion center to chat with me. I really appreciated that. I miss him.

Dr. Wangsness was a great doctor. He was always kind to all of his patients and co-workers. I worked with him for two years and I enjoyed it very much. He was always curious in what everyone was up too and took interest in people's lives. We will all miss him very deeply!

I was a patient of John's for many years. He was a great Doctor and more importantly a better person. He always let you know how much he cared for you and your family as you went through the treatment process as well as the follow-up appointments over the years. I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to get to know him. I will miss smile and his his stories of Mary, his Daughters, and of course the dogs.

As a physician I have referred patients to John beginning in 1977. I always received very good feedback from my patients about how much they liked him. He treated my mother-in-law 15 years ago for lung cancer when she was in her 80s. I thought she would not survive, but with John's care she was cured of what generally is a fatal cancer. She had 8 more years of a very full life thanks to John. When I had chemo myself in 2015 at the Maplewood Caner Center, John would often stop by to chat with me as I was getting my infusions. He was a very sincere and kind man with a good heart. He was compassionate and it was very real. He was a true tribute to the medical profession. The St. Paul medical community will miss him.

I was a patient of John's for many years and many years ago. I remember this kindness, his humor, his smile, his dog stories, but most of all, his assurance that whatever was ahead of me, he would be there to help me get through it. He did and he will be missed by thousands he "helped" in their time of need.
