Joseph Iten Obituary

Iten - Joseph Melvin (Joe), age 73, lost his life to cancer on October 25, 2002. Born in Anoka, MN on February 7, 1929, one year after his father Peter opened Osseo Motor Company. Joe was around the family's auto dealership daily as a chld, played football in High School, and went on to serve in the Korean War. In 1965, Joe and his brother Roy moved the family's now familiar Iten Chevrolet to its present location at I-694 and Brooklyn Blvd. Joe loved his family, spending his winter in Florida, and the summers on the boat he cherished. At his dealership, Joe could be found visiting with customers or out in the shop; his ability to repair anything was inherent. All who knew him will miss his wit and view of the world. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter & Laura; brother, Roy; sister, Helen; and son, Michael. Survived by wife, Helen; sons and daughters-in-law, Randall (Anita), Chris, Martin (Melissa); daughters and sons-in-law, Judith Valerius, Laura Gossman (Jim); Michelle; brother, Peter (Diane); sisters, Sr. Agnes Iten, CSJ, Myrie Hartkopf (Jim) and Gayle Sieg (Mark); grandchildren, Jill, Joel, Andrea, Tiffany, Steven, Brian, Michael, Jaimie, David, Vanessa, Meridith, Philip, Shivaun, Jessica and Charles; great-grandchildren, Jazmin, Jessica Rose, Jack, Sidney and Autumn. He is also survived by many relatives and friends. Memorial Gathering will be held at ST. ALPHONSUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7025 Halifax Ave. N., Brooklyn Center, on Friday, Nov. 1 from 12-3PM, with a Prayer Service at 1PM, and refreshments to follow. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorials be given to the Joe Iten Scholarship Fund, to provide educational assistance in business for students at North Hennepin Community College Foundation at 7411 85th Ave. North, Brooklyn Pk, MN 55445. My heart is sad and I know how sincerely you will be missed, Joe. You brightened our boating days all those years at King's Cove. However, I'm sure you, Coco and Glen Gaff are enjoying a get together and remembering all the wonderful times we had on H Dock. God bless you and keep you three. We love you.

Thank you Joe, for all the wonderful memories. You always had another take on any situation that presented itself to you. This is one of the many reasons why you made everyone around you better people. I remember one day on the dock (approx. 20yrs ago) you explained to me why you didn't buy new white shoes all the time - you proceeded to pull out a can of white spray paint and made them look like new. Only you could have come up with a crazy idea to actually paint your shoes AND the outcome be satisfactory. I will always cherish the memories. Our thoughts and prayers will always be with you and your family... God Bless.

Joe and Helen have been great friends and neighbors to us here in Florida. We will dearly miss Joe's face across out back hedge, his wit, and his insghtful view of almost anything from sports to politics to human nature. We hope to see Helen as soon as she is ready to come South for the winter.
