Mark Nelson Obituary

MARK ANTHONY NELSON, 57 SOUTH BELOIT - Mark Anthony Nelson, 57, passed away surrounded by family in his childhood home in South Beloit, IL, after courageously battling cancer. Mark was born on November 30, 1957 in Monroe, WI. He was raised in South Beloit, IL, by his mother, Ninette (Sammartano) Karnes, and his extraordinary stepfather, Borden Karnes who both loved Mark dearly. After graduating from South Beloit High School in 1976, he attended Rock Valley College and Northern Illinois University, graduating with a focus in computer technology. In the years that followed, Mark worked as an IT Security Analyst at Johnson Controls in Milwaukee, WI, CUNA Mutual in Madison, WI, and most recently at Alliant Energy in Madison, WI. With the birth of his children, Mark and Megan became his world. Always the most caring and supportive father, he coached his son Mark's youth baseball teams and volunteered with the Janesville theater as his daughter Megan pursued acting. His children remember him as a strong and loving father who never failed to put them first in his life. On March 24, 2015, he married Sunia in Madison, WI, who showered him with love and affection. Mark was an avid Milwaukee Brewer and Green Bay Packer fan. He was a skilled fisherman, with his favorite fishing expeditions being those he went on with his family. Mark was an incredibly generous individual and he was always willing to help his family and friends with whatever they needed no matter if it was a computer question or an extra hand in the kitchen or yard. Mark is survived by his doting wife, Sunia Nelson of Fitchburg, WI; his loving mother, Ninette Karnes of South Beloit, IL; his adored children, Mark Nelson II of Rockford, IL, and Megan Nelson of Fitchburg, WI; his favorite sister, Tamara (Dr. John) Onderak of South Beloit, IL; his brothers, Philip Karnes of South Beloit, IL and Timothy (Dr. Colleen) Nelson of Milwaukee, WI; niece and goddaughter, Alexis Onderak of South Beloit, IL; brother-in-law, Seku Haryadi and family of Madison, WI. He is preceded in death by his adored grandparents, Anthony and Lena Sammartano, his beloved stepfather Borden Karnes, and his uncles Marvin and Joseph Sammartano. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Mark will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2015 in Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 2222 Shopiere Road, Beloit, WI, with Fr. Bill Connell officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday in the church. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, assisted the family with arrangements. A Memorial in Mark's name will be established at a later date.
