Dear Jorja,
I am so sad to hear about your loss. Michael and I served together in the Army in the Fifties and at Army Headquarters in Stuttgart. Michael was a kind and gentle man, my best man at my wedding in 1956 and he was also a good soldier. I have followed his career with interest all the ensuing fifty-plus years, and occasionally I get out the old pictures from those days, and there he is...handsome as ever. (I even have a picture of his ancient Morris Minor Convertible which I'm sure would fail any "clunker" test today). Michael was a good man and he will be in my prayers.
With warm regards, Dick Lennard, Richmond, Virginia

I will always remember Michael with much love and more than a little reverence as my friend, mentor, and colleague. He was a musical and humanitarian giant whose intellect was matched only by his love for what music does, and by his incredible wife, Jorja Fleezanis. His kind being and guidance will be missed in ways I cannot at this time even begin to fathom.
I consider it one of the highest artistic compliments I ever got, when upon looking at a season I’d programmed for the American Radio Chamber Orchestra, he turned to me and, with much emphasis on the first word in the sentences, said “I’d buy a subscription.”
A puckish smile and an unusually kind voice, coupled with an encyclopedic memory, a love of people and of the music we share; these were all Michael. We get to carry these things forward now, as his gift to future colleagues and audiences. If we are one tenth as sharp as he was, we'll be doing a good job.

Michael felt music deeply and lived life fully. His passion, wit, and wisdom enriched anyone who read his essays and heard his lectures. He was an inspiring, honest, and generous colleague, and he left an abundance of warm hearts, cherished memories, and broad smiles in his wake.
Profound condolences to his wife, Jorja Fleezanis, and to his two sons, Sebastian and Adam.
