This is long overdue, but I want to send my gratitude for a teacher who gave me hope during challenging high school years. I keep the message he wrote to me in my graduation gift on my book shelf and when there are times I am forgetting who I am, I open up the book and am reminded of the time when he helped me to be brave and believed in me...just me...
Thank you Mr. Hemmelgarn for still inspiring hope even after 14yrs of your physical passing. I believe your spirit lives on in the hearts of all those students you have touched!

Mille,
I was deeply saddened by the news of Paul's death. You and Paul were so good to Andy - especially as Godparents - we still have his little red tricycle you gave to him. Please know you are in my prayers, Mille. Please know you and Paul made a difference in our lives.

Mrs. Hemmelgarn,
I was very sorry to hear of your husband's passing. Please accept my sympathies. Based on what others have said, Mr. Hemmelgarn was quite a great teacher and person. The same could be said for you.
I've thought of you over the years, especially when I've been in discussions about great teachers. You've always been at the top of my list. You were firm and had high expectations of your students, but you were fair and friendly. How great that two wonderful people and teachers lived in the same home!
When I was out jogging this morning the song, Another One Bites The Dust, played on my ipod. I thought of you as it brought me back to 1982 and the senior skit at WHS when MaryBeth Reed dressed up to look like you and handed the rest of us skit participants our "term papers" from your class. When she gave them to us, we'd look at the grades then fall off our chairs-another one biting the dust! :) Do you remember that?
Anyway, I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. May the love of your friends and family comfort you as you grieve.
Sincerely,
Bev (Winkels) Abbott

Rest in peace, Mr Hemmelgarn - I have often thought back on my time at HM and thought of you. You were an amazing teacher - just the right amount of discipline mixed with humor. You taught me more than just religion - you taught me compassion for all living things and passion for the chosen profession.
I am so sorry to those who love Mr Hemmelgarn so.
Rest in peace..
