Phil, we didn't always see eye to eye but you were always such a good friend. From the great conversations when we were "rolling" to when we were driving up to Duluth to see Heidi or driving down to Roseville to see Mels or Stef; you were always someone I could talk to. Reed and I have big shoes to fill at church. Don't worry about anything. We'll take care of things for you. You are and always will be a great friend, FOREVER. "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory that no one can steal." We had a lot of memories that I will treasure. Take care of yourself.

Phil became part of our rugby club when he first came to a Mounds View High School indoor rugby practice held in January or February of 2001 with his best friend. He was a great kid. We never heard a bad word out of him and he was always eager to be there … always. He loved people; anyone could tell that about him. He also loved being with us too and also loved learning about the Game. He had bright eyes and was eager to learn about rugby and be part of the team. He set a great example for other kids. It was worth the effort to be there just to see Phil; skinny kid, closely cropped red hair and a burning desire to play. He wasn’t the best athlete that played with us, but he was likely either the one player, or at least one of the players, that got the very most out of his ability. On our best teams in his senior year, he almost always played. We had some bigger faster guys that played his position, wing forward, generally open side wing forward, but Phil came to know what he was doing when he was out there and he was effective. He was pretty fast, which is a great help, but he was not a burner. He was especially reliable, however, and as determined as any of our kids. When we took second place in the Midwest Championships in 2002 and went on to the National Championship Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, Phil played with a broken bone in his leg until it was clear that he could no longer run and we had to take him out. Any of the rest of us might have sought a replacement much sooner, but Phil wanted to be on the field; he wanted to play to honor his teammates, his club and the Game in the truest traditions of Rugby Union Football. Phil honored those traditions beyond our measure. His teammates and coaches had great respect for Phil and he had a similar respect for them that was evident in the way that he played. He played with great desire and zeal just as I am told he approached everything he did, even including his efforts to help seniors and other adults from his church learn to use computers. Phil was a remarkable guy; one who will be missed by all of his teammates and coaches from the Mounds View Rugby Club. We extend our sympathy to his family.

From boyscouts to middleschool to highschool to after highschool you were a great person to know. This past summer you and I became more friends and I can't believe this happened. You'll always be in everything around us, your orange hat, your Jeep, your smile, everything about you. I hope they're treating you good up in heaven. You're truely missed down here.

When I think of Phil, I think of the word “smile”….it seemed to be etched permanently on his face. It’s impossible to describe Phil in a few words or sentences, but would, instead, require a large book to capture all he was about. He was generous, caring and everyone loved him. I’ll forever cherish the fortunate memories working by Phil’s side, watching him teach adult computer classes, observing him instruct Sunday School, seeing him participate in youth trips and witnessing him serving the homeless. Phil loved everyone with a zeal that couldn’t be matched and he was larger than life. Even a cast on his leg didn’t slow him down or break that smile of his. Our hearts burn with pain while we try to make sense of this tragic loss. Peter, Sue, Brian and Nathan, please know you’re in all our thoughts and prayers. God’s Peace.

Dear Thompson Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy.I read the notice of your sons passing with tears of sorrow filling my eyes. Please know that many people truly care for all of you.Although most people can't understand the pain and shock that you are going through and they don't know what to say or do for you, It is obvious that Phil was loved by all who knew him. My family lost our beautiful son Alex age 18 in April of this year.I can tell you that Love is eternal and no one can ever take that away.Phil is in your hearts and always with you.The most important thing that people could do for us was to care.Your family has many people that care.I care. Please contact me at anytime if you would like to talk.

sincerily,

I met Phil through my roommate, Stef, back when we were all still in high school. I never got the chance to really know him, but he would always say HI to me in the halls with a big smile on his face. I know so many people cared for Phil and loved him dearly and he had an impact on so many lives. His family and friends are in my prayers.

All I can say is that I was shocked when I heard of Phil's passing. I graduated from Mounds View with him. He always seemed like a happy, friendly and caring person. I never knew him as well as I would have liked but close friends of mine did and they always had nothing but good things to say about him. His family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers constantly. May you find healing in knowing that he is in a better place with no hurting or suffering. Phil, we all miss and love you more than you'll ever know. "Take refuge in His heart." -Supertones

I went to school with Phil and even though we weren't extremely close, we had many mutual friends and had a few classes together throughout the years. I've seen him quite a few times since graduation and when I heard the news I couldn't believe it. Phil was such a special person who always had a smile on his face and he will be greatly missed by SO many people! My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family and friends.

Phil was-is-always will be, in one word, amazing. I remember eating play-doh with him in sunday school when we were little kids. He'd say, "Mels try the orange, it tastes fruity." No matter what he did or said, what look he gave me, he could always make me laugh or smile. I'd see him in school and he'd say 'alright Mels, what trouble are we getting into this weekend?' I was so lucky to be able to see him almost every day. Phil was my best friend, he was the person I told everyone about. If I was having a hard time, he'd ask if I wanted him to come over and even if i said no, he'd already be in his car and at my house in about 5 minutes. Everyone is going to miss you so much Phil, but I'm glad that you're with God...now you're our Angel. Remember how much we love you. Give em hell up there, k? I love you.

Phil was the best person I have ever known. His ability to make anyone smile through anything made him the most generous person I know. I hope Phil was with us the past couple days and saw how many, many people loved him and miss him so much. I know I will never forget you Phil. I look forward to seeing you in Heaven. Give God a run for his money, as I'm sure you are! Look over me and be my guardian angel. I love you.

Wow. I am absolutely blown away. God has a plan for us all, and God's plan for Phil was to make everyone's lives seem not so bad as we all sometimes might think. Phil always put me in a great mood, he always had an inspiring and cheerful attitude in class, and even outside of class Phil was one of those friends you know would be your friend forever. Phil I'm so sorry this life was cut short and my condolences go out to the entire Thompson family. I'm so sorry, but I am also glad I was blessed with knowing such a wonderful person. I'll never forget the fun and frustrating times we all shared together.

I know I speak for everyone here at Dunwoody when I say that Phil will be greatly missed. I don't think that anyone could say a bad word about him. He was always smiling and in a good mood, I never heard him complain like so many of us do. My heart goes out to his family, I can only hope that they find solace in the fact that Phil influenced everyone around him for the better.

Please accept my deepest and most sincere condolences. My boyfriend Phillip Lee and Philip Thompson were close friends; when Phillip heard the news, it broke his heart in two. It’s so astounding sometimes how often we take the most simple pleasures in life for granted, never knowing when it will be our day to go. As my grandmother told me before she passed, our loved ones will always live through us. As long as we carry the memories with us, as long as we let them enjoy the laughter with us, as long as we keep them in our hearts, they will live through us. He will know every star that is shining in the night sky and see every tear that we cry. Philip will be among the many angels protecting us. My only wish for the family is that you will find refuge, strength, courage, faith, hope, and love in knowing that he’s still here.
