Virginia Monks Obituary

Virginia Elizabeth Thomas Monks, age 85, of Myton passed away February 21, 2013 at her daughter's home with her family by her side.
Virginia was born July 8, 1927 in Price, Utah, to Theodore William and Millicent Ann Stewart Thomas. She married Calvin J. Monks Dec. 20, 1951 in Elko, Nev. He died March 24, 2006.
Virginia was a teacher at Myton Elementary until her retirement. She was a long time member of the Myton Presbyterian Church. Virginia served many years as a Utah Girl's State counselor. At her death, Virginia was still a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Virginia loved her family and delighted in being with them. She especially found great joy with her grand and great-grandchildren. Virginia was an independent woman and thought nothing of loading up the children to drive over the mountain to Price, Utah, or to California to visit family. She enjoyed going to Nine Mile with her family for picnics, hikes and gathering wood. Virginia loved taking walks on the farm, picking asparagus, and giving hugs.
In their early married years, Calvin, Virginia and family spent summers in Colorado on a ranch and they have many fond memories from that time. She was a wonderful swimmer, even daring to water ski during the numerous trips to the lake. Virginia was a great cook and her chocolate sheet cake was her family's favorite.
She is survived by her children, Brad Monks, Provo; Michelle (Ralph) Ames, Roosevelt; Jane Osborne, Wood Cross; Tom (Boni) Monks, Myton; Kathy (Scott) Pedersen, Vernal; 15 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin, her parents, her siblings, Ted Thomas, Jr., Beverly Whipple and grandson Matthew Mecham.
Funeral services were held Feb. 25 at the Myton Presbyterian Church.
Burial in the Roosevelt Memorial Park.

MonksFamily (especially Jane), I was saddened with the news of your mother's death. I was 1st aquinted with Mrs Monks as a teacher in my elementary school. Then as the mother of the best friend a person could ever have. And then as a fellow teacher at Myton elementary- it took me months to call her Virginia and NOT Mrs Monks. Your family has been a big part of my growing up and I was sorry not to be there. There is break in the grapevine once one moves out of the basin. All my love, thoughts and prayers are with you.

Brad, Jane and Michelle, and families we are sorry for your loss. Our mom left us a little over a year ago as well.
I remember taking reading classes from your mom at Myton Elementary. She was always full of energy.
We think of you all as extended family.

i remember Mrs. Monks fondly. she was my 6th grade teacher the year we moved to Myton. she was very kind to a nervous, shy child who moved from a large school to one where everyone had known each other from the cradle
