Barbara Daniels Obituary

Barbara's painting can be seen on the downtown Ukiah visitor's map and guide at School and Clay Streets. Barbara (Dostal) Daniels, 09/25/1934-12/31/2023 Barbara Daniels was a dynamic personality who embraced life with gusto. She was a devoted wife and mother, a spirited and loyal friend, a generous and conscientious member of her community. Barbara infused this world with beauty and color in a way that few are able: through the gift of fine artistry. In her opinion, however, her greatest contributions to this world were her children and grandchildren. Born and raised in the city of Chicago, Barbara grew up a "good girl," a devoted Catholic, a stellar student, a kind and beautiful soul who wanted everyone to be happy and have fun. At an early age, it became evident that Barb was a gifted artist. She began studying at the Art Institute of Chicago at the age of 11 and maintained a connection with the Institute for decades. Barbara attended college at the University of Illinois, where she continued her art studies and excelled in every area of academia. It was at U. of I. where Barbara met the gregarious Jack Daniels, who became her husband of 61 years, until Jack's death in 2017. They had three children: John, Christine and Amy. In 1979, Barb and Jack moved their family from suburban Chicago to Ukiah. The natural beauty of Northern California inspired Barbara's creative spirit. She spent countless hours in her art studio, sketching, painting, teaching art lessons and establishing herself as a prominent local artist. She also was an avid gardener, a passionate seeker of knowledge, an excellent card player and a great cook. Barb rarely sat stillphysically, mentally or creatively! Above all, Barbara was a people person. Her relationships were her life. Barb would sacrifice any professional pursuit to spend time with her beloved children and grandchildrenor any of the cherished friends who colored her world more beautifully than any painting. She loved to laugh and had a wonderful, silly side that put people at ease. Barbara Daniels was a vivacious, generous and loving soul who touched many lives, and she will be missed terribly. Barbara is survived by three children and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Barra Winery in Redwood Valley. All are welcome.

In previous message, I mentioned their dog and cat and their names just came to me: Maggie ( dog) and Princess (cat).

I met Barbara and her now late husband, Jack, back in the early 80's, I believe. They were most welcoming! While they would go away, I was entrusted to care for their dog, cat, lovely home and pool! When their dog passed, Barbara called to, tearfully, let me know. I was so touched as she knew how I also cared about her. Once, while away, Barbara, had some prints in progress. She allowed me to continue processing them. Really! I was blessed not to have let her down. Whew! She shared some of her iris's when my mom passed and I have taken them with me over the years. They finally bloomed in full glory last year and I was able to let her know and then invited to take more later that year. Unfortunately, I never made it there and she moved away. I will have great personal memories of both her and of Jack. Both were assets to the community, their friends and, well, to life being lived.

Our weekends at the coast on "administrative" retreats were wonderful. We would take turns cooking meals. One time Barbara and Jack even went down to the waterfront just to get fresh crab so we could have really great fresh crab quiche. Barb and I were the same age so at almost 90 I won´t be able to drive back to Ukiah for her service but I will be there in spirit.
