DANIEL MOHN Obituary

Dan Mohn, 92, died of natural causes at his home in Sonora on July 10.
Dan was the son of Bena Unruh and Daniel E. Mohn and grew up on his family's small fruit ranch in Reedley, California. He had five siblings.
Dan's high school teachers spotted his math and English skills and encouraged him to attend college. After a year at U.C. Berkeley the Korean War intervened, and Dan served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952 until 1954. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a B.S. in engineering in 1957 and began a 37-year career in bridge engineering and construction. During his career, Dan worked on design and construction or reconstruction of all of the long-span bridges in California.
In 1973 he became project engineer for the replacement of the suspender ropes on the Golden Gate Bridge. In 1978 he was appointed as supervising engineer and became district engineer in 1982. He retired in 1994 after overseeing several major projects on the Golden Gate Bridge, including the complete bridge deck replacement.
Dan Mohn was known internationally. He was active in numerous professional organizations, including the International Bridge Tunnel & Turnpike Association and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He did consulting work on bridges in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
Dan and his wife, Linda, moved from Novato to Cedar Ridge in 1996. During their 34-year marriage they traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States. Their favorite travels included a Hemingway-style safari in Africa and crossing the Atlantic on a five-masted, square-rigged sailing ship. Summers were spent hiking in the Carson Pass area, where Dan loved photographing the wild flowers of the High Sierra. At home he loved riding his beloved "Gator" around the property.
Dan was a member of the Sonora Elks and Sons in Retirement.
Surviving Dan are his wife, Linda; his two children from a previous marriage, Kathlyne Lowe (husband John) and Michael Mohn (wife Kim); and four grandchildren, Andrew Mohn, Jonathan Mohn, Maribeth Mohn and Samuel Mohn. He is also survived by four nieces.
Dan was known as a sweet, loving and generous husband, father and grandfather. He always had a smile on his face and never spoke ill of anyone. He was loved and admired by all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.

Oh so sorry in learning the passing of my friend and classmate since first grade through junior college. Seeing Dan at class reunions renewed past memories. What a gentleman he was never bragging about his past accomplishments. I will miss our telephone conversations several times a year. Rest in peace Dan. My condolences to Linda and his two children of which he was very proud of.

My sincere condolences to Linda, my friend, my neighbor.
I will miss Dan very much. He was always a gentleman, kind, respectful, generous, quiet and soft spoken until you asked him about wine or the Golden Gate Bridge.
I shared so many memories with Dan and Linda, notably, their wedding day, hiking in Kirkwood and Silver Lake, many dinners at the City Hotel in Columbia and with our family members at Seven Sister´s and the National Hotel, wine tastings, a football game at UC Berkeley, a trip to the California State Fair, watching their Cedar Ridge home being built, rides in Dan´s antique Jeep in the Twain Harte Fourth of July Parade, dinners at their beautiful home with mini hikes and Gater rides around their property. And probably most notably, a day spent on top of the South Tower of the GGB to celebrate my 50th birthday.
I love you, Dan, and will miss your friendship.

John and I cherish the good times we spent with Dan and Linda, hiking the sierras, walking the ditch, enjoying wine from his cellar, and enjoying the view from the top of the Golden Gate Bridge. You´ve enriched our lives, Dan. We will miss you!

Truly a gentleman: kind and generous with his wealth of knowledge. He was so modest, I don't think most people realize how important he was to the safety and engineering of iconic structures like the Golden Gate. Thank you, Dan.
