Alfred Roberts Obituary

CONCORD - Al Roberts died peacefully on March 25, 2017, at The Birches of Concord.

He was born in 1930 to Margaret (Burns) Roberts and Alfred E. Roberts in Brooklyn, N.Y. Al grew up in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, attending parochial schools, and graduated from Saint Francis Prep in 1948.

After graduation, he joined The Redemptorists as a brother where he served in Baltimore, Md., Philadelphia, and Ephrata, Pa. When he decided the religious life was not for him, he moved back to Brooklyn and then joined the Army, where he served in Alabama for two years. It was there he met his lifelong friend, Dr. John Atkinson, who would invite Al home with him on leave and introduced him to his family and friends and eventually persuaded Al to attend LSU after the service. While Al attended LSU, he taught at Our Lady of Mercy School in Baton Rouge.

During his trips back to Brooklyn while attending LSU, Al fell in love with his first wife, Margaret Kelleher. They married a year before he graduated and she moved to Louisiana and worked as a nurse for the LSU football team. All three of their daughters were born in Baton Rouge.

After graduation, Al worked as an executive for many years for Blue Cross, which moved him to New Jersey from 1968 to 1970, then back to Baton Rouge, then New Orleans, until in 1976, he decided to follow his lifelong dream of living in New England and moved his family to Franklin, where he started work with Northeast Delta Dental not long after the Concord office opened. Al thoroughly enjoyed his career as a marketing executive and the many friends he made over those years.

Al's beloved wife, Margie, passed away in 1985. A couple of years later, Al met and married his second wife, Simone Bourgeois. After Al's retirement, they lived in Wells, Maine, where they owned an art gallery together. Al painted and Simone framed. They spent their winters in Hutchinson Island, Fla., where they had many cherished friendships. After Simone's passing in 2013, Al continued to go to Florida in the winters until 2015 when he moved back to New Hampshire to be near his family.

Al was an artist all his life. He painted in oil and watercolor. His paintings hang in homes from Florida to Maine. Al was also a 12-year survivor of pancreatic cancer.

Al was predeceased by his beloved wives, Margie and Simone; his parents; his brothers, Father James Roberts and Brother William Roberts.

He is survived by his daughters, Maureen Roberts Rowley,Elizabeth Roberts, and Eileen Palazzolo and her husband, Fred; four grandchildren, Catherine Schurman and her husband, Kevin, Justin Mills, Michael Palazzolo, and Joseph Palazzolo; and three great-grandchildren, Gunnar, Levi, and Adeline Schurman. Al is also survived by his cousin, Janet Cianci, and her husband, Salvatore.

Al had a great zest for life and a wonderful sense of humor and will be forever missed by his loving family and his many friends.

What a marvelous man! Al was my best buddy in the Army 1956-58 at Ft. Rucker AL. We had lots of fun and laughs in an otherwise tough 2 years. We kept in touch over the years and got together a couple of times in NJ. I am so gratified to see what a beautiful family he created and the many friends whose lives he enriched.

I knew Al during his time working with BCBSLA. I worked in the Claims area during the time 1973 until he left the company. I lived in Covington, La when he lived in Tcfuncta Estates in Madisonville, LA. We commuted into New Orleans to work. I truly enjoyed knowing Al and often questioned what happened to him. Today, 6/28/17, I attended a retiree lunch and his name came up. I searched the internet and found his obituary. While this answered my curiosity, I am left with mixed emotions. It is wonderful to know he lived a full life with many family members and friends surrounding him; I am saddened to have missed these obvious happy times that he enjoyed.
Rest well my friend and know that I have often thought of you.

Maureen, Elizabeth and Eileen,

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing; I just heard. I believe he had a great life, loved you dearly and knew you all loved him. He meant the world to me and I'll never forget his smile and laugh because he always loved to smile and laugh at us when we were together. One of the great man!

Dear Roberts Family, We Just learned of your Dad's passing. We are so very saddened by the news. He is a beautiful person who will always remain close in our hearts. We rented his Belvidete cottage back in 1988/89 and remained close to him and Simone throughout the years as he watched our three kids grow up over the years each summer at GRB. We cherish the fond memories created by times with your dad and we will hold them dear in our hearts. We know your Dad loved all of you dearly and deeply and was so very proud of each of you. He always bragged about his kids and grandkids, always with a big smile on his face! May you find peace and comfort in knowing the incredible special impact your Dad had on anyone who crossed his life path. Each of you carries on his legacy. How blessed you are to embody all of his exceptional qualities. God bless you with His abundant love . Much love, the Ferranti Family- Jeannie, Stephen, Kelsey, Stacey & Justin

Al was a very significant person in John's and my life and our children were young together. Al was like sunshine wherever he was and he and John laughed so much that it was a pleasure to be with them. A little bit of sunshine has gone out of the world now and both of them are greatly missed.

To my cousins Maureen, Elizabeth, Eileen and family, I will miss seeing Uncles Als warm and welcoming smile. Miss the shared stories of our parents good times spent together. Hearing his infectious laugh, while telling these stories. Mostly, enjoying his wonderful sense of humor, all of you share. Thinking of you all, in your time of sorrow. Until we meet again, may the Lord hold him in the palm of his hand. Love Mary, Keith, Abby and Ben
