Mabel Covatis Obituary

MANCHESTER - Mabel Covatis (Papagiotas) of Manchester passed away on Oct. 24, 2013, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on Sept. 5, 1913, she had just celebrated her 100th birthday with a month of visits by close friends and family. She was the daughter of the late Stergious and Panagiou (Anagnost) Papagiotas. She was the beloved wife of the late Socrates Covatis for 40 years before he passed away in 1972.

Mabel was employed at Pariseau's on Elm Street in Manchester and enjoyed many trips to New York City as the store's lingerie buyer. While in New York, she always found time to enjoy the opera or the latest Broadway show. She lived independently in her own home well into her 98th year. Eventually, a broken hip, followed by rehabilitation at Villa Crest led to her decision to remain there, with no ironing or meals to prepare. She enjoyed the visits by the staff, volunteers and many family members.

Mabel was best known for her outstanding "Killer" checker games, Greek pastries and elaborately crocheted afghans, which were raffled off at St. George's annual Glendi. She enjoyed the company of friends as a member of the Daughter's of Penelope and the St. George workshop.

Mabel is survived by her children, Nicholas Covatis and his wife Renee Van Leuvan of Manchester and Cynthia DelPrincipe and her husband, Joseph of Waterbury, Conn. Her family also includes nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, all of whom will miss her greatly.

.

My mom Agnes who roomed with Mabel will surely miss her - she taught her to play checkers and enjoyed her friendship. My mom and I want to extend our condolences to Mabel's family whom we got to know and enjoy talking to at Villa Crest.
