Matthew Crosson Obituary

Matthew John Crosson, an English teacher, musician, and longtime resident of Manchester, NH, died unexpectedly at his home on December 10, 2017 at the age of 44.

Matthew is survived by two brothers; his older brother, Andrew Crosson and wife Jennifer; his younger brother, Chad Crosson and wife Jennifer; nephew, Joseph; two nieces, Jamie and Annabelle; two uncles, Al Greenough and Mike Greenough and wife Gayle; aunts, Jackie Greenough, Mary Greenough, and Barbara Arnott; his loyal, furry sidekick, Sally; and extended family and friends.

Matthew was born in North Reading, MA on January 22, 1973 to the late Walter Andrew Crosson and Donna Jean Crosson. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1996 with a degree in English. After earning his bachelor's degree, Matthew proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force as a linguist, serving from 1996 to 2000 with distinction. Following his military career, Matthew graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a Master of Education Degree. He became a high school English teacher and taught for several years at Central High School in Manchester, NH and most recently at Alvirne High School in Hudson, NH.

In becoming a teacher, Matthew truly found his calling. Wherever he taught, he quickly became popular with the students, because he understood and valued each one. He would attend their open mic nights, rally them to the championship rounds of quiz bowl, and cheer them on to victory in softball. He encouraged dreams, listened thoughtfully to their viewpoints, and genuinely cared for the young people entrusted to him.

As an avid musician and song writer, he loved playing with other musicians, and he composed multiple albums which received national airplay.

A devoted godfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, Matthew was dedicated to his family. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephew, and they adored him. Every Patriots game would find him at his Uncle Mike's house, cheering the Pats to victory. He loved playing 45s with his family, never letting a partner down. His brothers were his best friends, and he was fiercely loyal to them. To be Matthew's friend meant that you were listened to, encouraged, valued, and loved.

ARRANGEMENTS: His Visitation will be held in the Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover St., Manchester, NH on Sunday, December 17, from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. I learned of Matt's passing way too late, too late to say goodbye in a formal sense. I feel like I will be saying goodbye everyday, and on better days in the future, hopefully nothing but "thank yous" for the light, music, depth, and richness he brought to my life. I don't know how to cope. It is a struggle. The holidays aren't the holidays. I think the only consolation is something Matt said to me after we broke up: "A huge revelation this morning, Ali.... Don't worry about us- our relationship will always be strong, we have music to keep us together!" I like to think when I listen to his incredible music, we are still linked. May his family and friends find connection and perhaps a modicum of consolation in his gorgeous music. Sending my unwavering love to Chad, Jenny, Andrew. I will always be incredibly sorry...and grateful for getting to know you all, and for the most intense and beautiful love I have ever known.

I first met Professor Crosson, (Matt) when I was a freshman at Nashua Community College. I was in my late forties at the time and found him to quickly becoming my favorite Professor. He always carried himself with respect and a mischievous twinkle of a fun loving trouble-maker in his eyes. Only the specialist of souls carry that twinkle in my opinion. My deepest condolences to the whole family for the loss of someone so gifted and special. God Bless!

Matt Crosson wrote, "The joy I find in teaching is a joy I have never experienced in any other profession. Helping kids grasp concepts and stretch themselves beyond their own limitations is a privilege and honor that I do not take lightly."

I worked with Mr. Crosson and I valued and respected him. In these early years of teaching, I learned so much from him and those things will never go away. Matt loved teaching and was a master teacher.

I am saddened by his death and he will be missed every day at Alvirne High School.

Matt was my colleague and friend through his years at Central High School. He was a kind man with wonderful sense of humor and extraordinary patience. He also loved to "poke" people on facebook long after it stopped be popular - which made me crack up in laughter so very often.

Matt's passing saddens me greatly and my heartfelt sympathies and prayers are with his family and friends who grieve this inconceivable loss.

I believe strongly that we are his legacy and should honor his memory by being kind and present with those we come in contact, savor the beauty and power of words, and live our lives with authenticity and honesty. I know that I will strive to do that in honor of you, Matt Crosson; friend, colleague and James Building neighbor.

Matt was my first "best friend" back in my Franklin School days. I'll never forget how sad I was when he moved away from Melrose. It's been great to reconnect on Facebook and see that we both ended up as high school teachers. I wish we had been able to reconnect in person.

My sincere condolences to Andrew, Chad and the rest of the Crosson Family.
