William T. Shutt

1925 - 2013

BEDFORD - William T. "Bill" Shutt, 88, of Bedford, died peacefully on Oct. 14, 2013, at his home, after a period of declining health.

Born in Boston on April 23, 1925, he was the son of Charles and Barbara (McDonough) Shutt. He lived in Chelmsford, Mass., for several years. He raised his family of 10 children in Brookline.

Mr. Shutt graduated from Saint Patrick High School, Watertown, Mass., and attended Boston University.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a B-17 turret gunner.

Until his retirement in 1985, he was employed 31 years with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company as a National Yellow Pages sales manager.

Bill was a staunch, lifelong Democrat who was active in local and national political campaigns in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He liked to travel, tend to his gardens, and was an avid reader. Bill was proud of his Irish heritage and will be remembered for his charismatic wit and sense of humor.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 39 years, Gertrude "Trudy" (Hastings) Shutt. She died Aug. 25, 1984. He was also predeceased by two sons, Gary M. Shutt in 1994, and William J. Shutt in 2011.

Family member include his wife of 24 years, Miriam (Demers) Shutt of Bedford; his sons; Dennis Shutt of Williston, Fla., Kevin Shutt and his wife, Karen, of Manchester, Thomas Shutt and his wife, Susan, and Timothy Shutt and his wife, Lisa, all of Brookline; his daughters, Karen Hebert and her husband, Leonard, of Bedford, Dianne Green and her husband, Arnold, of Hooksett, Marybeth Snow and her husband, Jeffrey, of Hollis, and Theresa Faucher and her husband, Michael, of Windsor, Conn.; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his identical twin brother, Joseph F. Shutt of Gloucester, Mass.; a sister, Patricia DeBesse of Houston; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

services: Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Connor-Healy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 537 Union St., corner of Concord Street, Manchester. The funeral will be held Friday with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Saint Elizabeth Seton Church, Bedford. Private burial will follow at a later date.
