SPRINGFIELD - Patricia Ann Cain, 81, of Springfield, passed away Wednesday afternoon, December 30, 2015. She was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on May 18, 1934, the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Agnes (Gooley) Weindorf. Her family lived on Presque Isle on Lake Erie, where her father served as superintendent of the peninsula. As a child, her days were spent playing on the waters of Lake Erie. She took a boat to school, played on the Flagship Niagra and in the lighthouse, cleaning the beacon, and sold bait at the Erie public dock. Patty was a graduate of the Villa Maria Academy in Erie and St. Vincent School of Nursing, also in Erie. Following graduation, she worked at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, University Hospital, Cleveland, where she met and married Philip Cain, a student at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. She retired as an R.N. from Clark County Developmental Disabilities where she worked for over 20 years and served as camp nurse at YMCA Camp Evergreen for many years. She was a member of the Ohio Nurses Association, the St. Vincent Nursing Alumni Association, Flagship Niagra League, and volunteered with the Ohio Reads program at Lincoln Elementary. For 32 years, Patty, along with her husband, Philip, organized and ran the annual Mid-Winter Banjorama, held in Springfield, which was attended by national and international musicians and music fans. She enjoyed reading, traveling, pursuing her life-long love of the water, and her dogs, Taz, Sadie and Zoie. Patty is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Philip Cain; and two children, Susan Sidner of Mechanicsburg and Dr. Jeff (Brenda) Cain of Springfield; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Drew) Kupper, Chrissy Sidner, Grant McDaniel, Grace McDaniel, Megan (Bobby) Neff, and Addie, Sarah, Jack and Lily Cain; two great-grandchildren, Haley Neff and Owen Kupper; special friends, Marlane (Jerry) Barker, Lucianne (Jack) Lilienthal and Shane and Mary Latham and their families; and the many who considered her their "Grandma." Also surviving are many cousins in the Erie, PA area and a special aunt, Frances Gooley of Salt Lake City, Utah. She was preceded in death by a son, Patrick in 2008. The family would like to thank Patty's many caregivers, Drs. Jan and Mark Roberto, Kevin Ahern, Scott Kellogg, Dave Monjot, and Hussein Jawadi, her "private duty nurse," Susie Sullivan Sprinkle, and the staffs of the James Cancer Hospital, Springfield Regional, and the Springfield Masonic Community. A gathering of family and friends will be held 4-8 p.m. Monday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Tuesday in St. Teresa Church with Rev. Frs. John MacQuarrie and Louis Asobi as celebrants. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Developmental Disabilities of Clark County, 2527 Kenton St., Springfield, OH 45505.
