Alice Cornelia Goewey Goebel
NORTH NASSAU - Alice Cornelia Goewey Goebel, 88, of Old Mill Pond Road, North Nassau, Rensselaer County, NY, entered eternal rest and joined her beloved husband, the Honorable Henry Goebel, Jr., on Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Mrs. Goebel, born in Albany, was a lifelong resident of the Capital Region. Daughter of the late William Frost Goewey, Sr., and Christina Florence Ernst Goewey, she received her elementary education at the District #10 one-room school in North Nassau and graduated from Averill Park Central High School, Class of 1949. She received Bachelor's and Master's of Science Degrees from New York State College for Teachers at Albany (predecessor to SUNY Albany). A business education teacher at Long Lake Central School, she later substituted for more than thirty years at Averill Park Middle and High Schools where she also taught Adult Education keyboarding classes. She worked for the New York State Teachers Association, Albany and for Professor J.C. Hurewitz of Columbia University's Near and Middle East Institute.
A twelve-year member of the Happy Clovers 4-H Club, she was a delegate to the 1949 National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago as New York State Girls' Record winner and two years later was New York State Girls' Achievement winner. Mrs. Goebel was district 4-H leader for the towns of Sand Lake and Nassau, she served as Rensselaer County 4-H Teen Ambassador advisor and as New York State Teen Ambassador Key Leader. In 1993, she was honored with the Cornell Cooperative Extension award as a long-time supporter of Cooperative Extension in New York State and in 1995 was elected a trustee of the New York State 4-H Foundation. Mrs. Goebel represented New York State at several Northeast Regional 4-H Volunteer Leader forums, the National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC, the Canadian National 4-H Conference in Toronto and was the 1984 New York State delegate to the Salute to Excellence national conference. In 1987, she participated in the University of Wisconsin's 4-H Impact study group in Nashville. She served as a presenter at area 4-H middle-management conferences and was active at the Schaghticoke Fair working with the Teen Ambassadors in publishing the daily "News of the Fair." As an adult, she continued to exhibit her knitting, baked goods and gardening projects up into her 80's, receiving Best of Fair three times for her Sour Cream Coffee Cake.
Long interested in local history and genealogy, she served on the Town of Nassau Historic Preservation committee, was a member of the Capital District Genealogy Society, the Dutch Settlers Society of Albany, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as a state chairman, a charter member of the Van Rensselaer Chapter, serving as chapter treasurer and DAR Good Citizen chairman and Constitution Day Bells Across America chairman at Oakwood Cemetery where bells were rung simultaneously in every time zone at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, National Society Children of the American Revolution, New York State senior chairman and Nancy Staring Society senior society officer and chairman, National Society Daughters of the American Colonists, serving as State Vice Regent, State Chaplain, State Corresponding Secretary, and state chairman, as well as, regent for 20 years, chaplain and treasurer of the Fort Orange Chapter, National Society Colonial Dames of the XVII Century charter member of the Anna Van Rotmers Chapter in 1990 and then later joining the Floris Willemse Krom Chapter, serving as State Historian and state insignia chairman, National Society New England Women, as well as, several local historical societies.
Alice was a member of the Nassau Women's Republican Club serving as the president and treasurer.
While a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Albany, she met the love of her life, Henry Goebel, Jr., in 1950, while participating in the church's College Youth Group. She was a Sunday School teacher and confirmation class tutor for many years. Alice was a past officer of the Troy, NY, Christian Women's Club.
Survivors include two sons, Colonel (Ret.) Peter K. Goebel and wife, Terri Lynn M. Goebel, North Nassau, NY and Jonathan E. Goebel and wife, Ruth L. S. Goebel, North Nassau, NY; a daughter, Elizabeth L. G. Mosher and husband, Jeffrey S. Mosher, Little Falls, NY; ten grandchildren, Michael P. Goebel and wife, Lindsay S. Goebel, Castleton, NY, Linnea C. Goebel, Englewood, CO, Steven E. Goebel and wife, Jessica K. Goebel, Harrisburg, PA, Joshua P. Goebel and wife, Rebekah B. Goebel, Katharine D. Goebel and David B. Goebel, Decatur, GA, Philip J. Mosher and Abigail C. Mosher, Little Falls, NY, Anna M. Goebel and Martha K. Goebel, North Nassau, NY; two great-grandchildren, Cilicia J. Goebel, Decatur, GA and Liam C. Goebel, Harrisburg, PA; a sister, Marion G. Wells, North Nassau, NY; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Henry Goebel, Jr., December 7, 2009; son, Paul H. Goebel, December 10, 2020; father, William F. Goewey, Sr., December 20, 1971; mother, Christina F. E. Goewey, June 19, 1978; brother, William F. Goewey, Jr., March 21, 2017; sister-in-law, Doris H. J. Goewey, September 10, 1999; and brothers-in-law, Edward T. Goebel, November 25, 1994 and Warren E. Wells, December 6, 2019.
Services will be held in the spring.
