Frances De Tore Obituary

Frances C. "Fran" (Spina) De Tore 1926 - 2016
UTICA - Mrs. Frances C. "Fran" (Spina) De Tore, age 90, passed away peacefully with family members by her side on Friday, October 21, 2016.
Fran was born in Utica on January 7, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Antonio and Giovanna Guarino Spina.
Fran was raised and educated in Utica. She graduated from Thomas R. Proctor High School in 1943. Immediately after high school at the age of 16, Fran entered the Faxton Hospital School of Nursing in Utica. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1946 and was awarded the Florence Nightingale Pin. This honor was given to a Faxton graduate who best exemplified the truest qualities of a nurse. She was a proud member of the Faxton Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.
On September 28, 1957, Fran was united in marriage to Rudolph T. De Tore. They shared a loving relationship for 55 years until his passing on November 28, 2012.
Fran loved the profession of nursing. It was her true calling, second only to being a wonderful mother. She was a practicing Registered Nurse for 50 years and was a well-respected medical professional. She worked in Utica hospitals since becoming an R.N. at the age of 19 and was much loved by the patients she served and by her many nurse colleagues. She concluded her long nursing career as a weekend nursing supervisor at the Masonic Care Community.
Fran loved the fall of the year and all of its beautiful colors. She loved preparing meals for her family and took great pride in having all of them by her side.
A beautiful and loving mother, Fran is survived by her five loving and devoted children: MaryCarmel De Tore, Janice and Bill Catalano, Thomas De Tore and partner Jim McGuire, Laurie and Dr. William F. Cox, MD and Evelyn and Jim Schiavetta. She is also survived by her beloved grandson, Lance Joseph Cox, the light of her life.
Fran is also survived by her sister-in-law, Alice Spina, her niece, Jennifer Spina, and her nephews, Tony, Richard and Nicky Spina and their spouses. Fran also leaves her cousins and many friends especially her dear and long-time friend, Mrs. Florie Scarchilli. Fran was predeceased by her beloved brothers, Joseph M. Spina and Nick A. Spina and her infant sister.
The De Tore family would like to acknowledge its gratitude to the staff of the Siegenthaler Center in New Hartford.
Fran's strong faith and religion guided her through life. Another angel has entered into Heaven.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Fran's funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Wednesday at 10:00 from the funeral home and at 11:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. To Janice,Bill,Carm,Tom,Laurie , Evie and families

Janice we have known eachother for over 30 years. You are my sister. To all of you , I extend my deepest sympathies and pray for all of you during this emotional time. Throughout the years Janice and I often told stories about our parents , how our Dads will always be our heroes and how much our Mothers LOVE TO COOK. No matter what, that stove was always on. I personally appreciate that I know your family. I will always remember that your Mom asked about me everyday as I deal with my illness. Now I too have another angel praying for me in heaven.Memories of your Mom will stay with you forever. And when you think of her that will put a smile on your face. Give Lance a hug for me. God bless your Mom and each and everyone of you.

For Fran's family: I worked with Fran at Masonic Home in the early 80's when she was the head nurse on 1st Smith Stewart Wing. I loved Fran, she was such a warm, wonderful woman and nurse who took a 20 something young woman under her wing. I was working as a nurse's aide and Fran was a huge influence in my life. She encouraged me to go back to school to get my RN (which I did) and was the ultimate role model in nursing. She was professional, knowledgeable, kind and patient. She loved all her staff and patients and encouraged us to do our best everyday. She also introduced this Irish-Ukrainian girl to real Italian food thru her cooking and baking. She inspired me to make "real" sauce and lasagne. I moved to Syracuse to go to RN school and we lost touch. But we exchanged Christmas cards for many years and getting her cards always made me smile. She really loved her family and talked about them all the time along with her beloved Rudy. I can still see her in her bleached white uniform, starched white cap and twinkling eyes. Heaven has truly gained and angel and earth is morning her loss... Mary Teelin Futterman RN
