George Spohr Obituary

George Spohr 1981 - 2018
Beloved Son, Brother and Uncle
NEWBURGH, IN - George Louis Spohr, 37, of Newburgh, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018, at his home surrounded by family.
He was born July 13, 1981, in Brooklyn, to George Edward and Linda Louise (Powierski) Spohr.
He was executive editor of the Evansville Courier & Press and regional editor for Gannett's Indiana newspapers outside of Indianapolis, leading journalism efforts in Lafayette, Richmond, Muncie and Evansville, as well as at The Gleaner in Henderson, Kentucky.
He moved to Newburgh in October 2017 and was previously executive editor of the Journal & Courier in Lafayette.
He was Gannett's youngest executive editor in the country and was known for finding his staff's hidden skills and encouraging their professional growth, as well as his ability to organize and fine-tune newsroom operations.
He worked at The Observer-Dispatch for two years beginning when he was a senior in high school. He knew he wanted to be a journalist at 11 when he began his own paper, Spohr News, typing out daily news, sports and weather to sell to neighbors.
He was an avid hiker, loved Lincoln State Park and its fire tower and enjoyed New Harmony State Park's trails. He also loved flying and aspired to be a pilot.
He is survived by his parents, George and Linda Spohr, of Deerfield; sister and brother-in-law, Kristen Spohr-Fulmer and Shawn Fulmer, of Utica; and two nephews, Alexander and Wesley Fulmer, of Utica.
His family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. A. Stevens and the nurses and staff at Oncology Hematology Associates for their kindness and compassion.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Prayers will begin at 8:45 a.m., Saturday, at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, Utica, then continue for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 28, 2018, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1206 Lincoln Ave. Utica. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, July 27, 2018, at Heintz Funeral Home.

George and Linda, I was working in the Monastery Gift Shop in Ferdinand, IN, when the two of you and George came in. He seemed to be a kind and gentle person with such a beautiful smile. I was so sorry to read of his death and offer you my sympathy and prayers. Sr. Ann Marie Howard, OSB

My husband worked with him and George was so surprised that I spent time in Poland N Y. Hope you are watching all the love being sent from the other side. Gordon really liked you and thought you added much to the paper. I wish I got to meet and know you.

I worked with George at The Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y., and he was a larger-than-life figure with a booming laugh and easy way about him. He could be playful one moment and be serious the next when it came to work. We stayed in touch and I watched as his career advanced and he kept his good humor about him throughout. I am at such a loss for words. My deepest sympathies to his family. This is a profound loss. I wrote a tribute to George here: http://aboutmenshow.com/when-death-sends-you-a-message-about-life/

I met George when he came to work at The World Newspaper in Coos Bay, Oregon. We both ended up moving to The Sentinel Newspaper in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. I loved George dearly. He made an impression on each and every person his life touched. He will be missed so very much. My prayers go out to all who knew and loved George. The world will never be the same without his big personality in it. I love you George. Until we meet again. ❤
