Matthew Landers Obituary

Matthew Maurice
Landers
UTICA/ CA
Matthew Maurice Landers was born on October 21, 1952 in Utica, NY. After a long journey with cancer, he passed away peacefully on March 12th, 2015 in Los Angeles, CA at the home of his daughter, Lily Landers, and son-in-law, Kevin Davis, with daughter, Fiona Landers, and son-in-law, Joel Spence, by his side. In addition to being a father, Matt was an accomplished actor, starring in over 80 television shows and 20 major motion pictures. A 1970 graduate of Notre Dame High School, Matt worked his first professional season as an actor at the Surflight Summer Theatre in Beach Haven, New Jersey. Shortly thereafter, he studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music and appeared as Jesus in Godspell in his first Equity performance at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston. He continued as Jesus in Godspells first National Tour. Matt made his Broadway debut as the first replacement in the role of Sonny in the musical Grease at the Royale Theatre. In 1978, Matt was nominated for a New York Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance - described as brilliant in the New York Times - in the Stephen Schwartz musical, Working. In Hollywood, Matt starred in many many television shows, most notably, as Pinkerton in The George Carlin Show. On the big screen, his featured roles included 48 Hrs., Die Hard, Down Periscope and a starring role as Ray in the Academy Award-winning Best Live Action Short, Ray's Male Heterosexual Dance Hall. In 2002, Matt returned to New York and his theatre roots, performing in numerous Off-Broadway productions. Additionally, he played Picasso at the St. Louis Repertory Theatre, and traveled the country with Ann-Margret in the national tour of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He also journeyed to Europe and performed in Breaking Legs at The English Theatre in Vienna, Austria. Off-stage, Matt filled the role of Girls Fastpitch Softball Coordinator for Harlem RBI: Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities. He uplifted the program and inspired excellence in all the players and coaches he worked with on and off the field. He devoted the last years of his life to caring for his mother, Mary Landers (nee Caccia) and his father Maurice Landers, both of whom still reside in North Utica and just celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. He is survived by his parents, Mary and Maurice; his brothers, James, William and Thomas; and his sisters-in-law, Dolores and Gail. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Murphy Cross, and his partner, Keira Keeley. Finally, he is survived by his daughters Lily and Fiona who will love him forever.

You'll always be my favorite Andrews Sister. Sad to see you make your exit so soon. But you leave to the sound of applause for a life well lived.

I was very disappointed to learn that Matt, a former classmate of mine at ND, passed away. I was well aware of Matt's accomplishment's on the big screen as well as TV. Matt was so fearless, he was a hero to me. It was a thrill to see Matt be as successful as he was in a very competitive profession. I wish I had a chance to visit with Matt when he visited Utica over the years. I hope all of Matt's dreams came true. My dearest sympathies to the entire Landers family. Thanks for the great memories at Notre Dame.

My Brother Matt was a very talented member of our family. From the earliest
time of wearing a mop top wig portraying a Beatle to his later triumphs of Jesus and many other roles, he made us all so proud.
Mom and Dad held such great pride in their son, the actor. He could sing, dance, and act and we were all so proud of him. He was more than an actor, he was Mom and Dad's son and to Bill, Tom, and I he was mostly our brother! We loved him in life and we will each mourn him in our own ways.
We were lucky to have him the all too short time we held him in our hearts.
Rest in Peace Matt. We love you!

To the Landers Family
I am very sad to hear of Matt's passing. We spent 4 years in the same class at ND and have stayed in touch over the years. I owed him a phone call but now I'll have to say good bye to my dearest friend and the most positive person I ever met. So long Matt. You were the best.

To my grade school buddy Matt, may you rest in peace.
To Mr & Mrs Landers my sincerest condolences. ( My late mother Rose always shared stories about Matt with me )
To James, William, Thomas Dolores & Gail as well.
To Keira, Lily and Fiona I hope you find the strength to remember the best parts of him.
Matt and I were close friends at St Peters ( Did he ever tell you about our Jr. Beatles or the Moonlighters Bands ? ) and for a year at Notre Dame. Although I lost touch with Matt, I always loved hearing his voice on TV or in the movies ( I always recognized his voice before I recognized him).
May he rest in Peace.

To the Landers Family,

We are sorry to hear of Matt's passing. Did not know that he had been ill. Matt was a little younger than Jimmy and I but I can still see his smile and piercing eyes. I have been away from Spratt Pl. for 50 years but still try to stay in touch with the neighborhood that I grew up in. To Mary and Morris and the entire Landers family our deepest sympathy and prayers.
