Michael Owen Albertson, 62, of Northampton, MA and Clinton, NY died on March 21, 2009 in Northampton after a short battle with an aggressive form of thyroid cancer. He is survived by his wife Debra Boutin, a professor of mathematics at Hamilton College. He leaves behind sons Matthew (Albertson) Konda and Nicholas Albertson both of Chicago, IL, daughter Elizabeth Albertson and step-daughter Holly (Boutin) Alexander of both of Florence, MA. Michael also leaves behind three grandchildren - Morgan, Sonali and Anjali. Mike was the son of Howard and Mildred (Palmer) Albertson of Philadelphia, PA and was raised in Abington, PA. He attended Michigan State University where he completed his bachelor's degree in mathematics before going on to the University of Pennsylvania to earn his Ph.D. Soon after graduate school, Mike became a professor of mathematics at Smith College in Northampton, MA where he happily taught and researched mathematics for more than 35 years. Mike's area of mathematical interest was graph theory, the study of networks. He was well known in the international graph theory community, and published more than 70 research articles with 33 different collaborators. The things Mike loved most in life were his family, mathematics, and playing soccer. He is sorely missed by many.
