Nicholas J. "Nick" Kelly, of the Claxton Manor in Herkimer and formerly of Sherrill Lane in New Hartford, died unexpectedly on Saturday, December 28, 2013. On June 20, 1953, Nick married his high school sweetheart, Jean Long, in St. Mary's Church, Little Falls, NY. Jean died in 2004 after a loving union of 51 years. Nick is survived by his four children and 10 grandchildren: daughter, Jane Kelly Guzewich and her husband, Dan, of Herkimer, NY, and their three daughters, Emily and Jean, of Silver Spring, MD, and Spc. Jessica Guzewich, of Fort Sill, OK; son, Nick and his wife, Tonda, of Edmond, OK, and their three daughters, Lacy, Deidra and Julia; son, Bill and his wife, Sara, of Glastonbury, CT, and their two sons, William and Matthias, and daughter, Margaret; and son, David and his wife, Rachel, of Silver Spring, MD, and their daughter, Emma Jean. Nick is also survived by two brothers, Charles (Ann), of Norwalk, CT, and Jack, of Wofford Heights, CA; a sister, Ellen (William) Armstrong, of Cooperstown; and cousins, Ann Vandelinder, of New Hartford, Jim (Margaret) Vandelinder, of Old Forge, and Claire (BJ) Adamski, of Vernon. He was predeceased by sister, Terese, in 2011. Nick served proudly in the United States Navy in the Korean War. He served aboard the battleship USS Los Angeles and later on the destroyer the USS Epperson. It was aboard the USS Epperson that Nick served in Operation Castle Bravo and witnessed the first dry hydrogen bomb ever detonated. Nick graduated from Utica College in 1958 and received his master's degree in education from SUNY at Oneonta in 1962. Nick was an elementary school teacher for 34 years, retiring in 1992 after 32 years of teaching in Clinton Central Schools. Nick was a member of the National Association of Atomic Veterans, the Clinton Teachers Association, the New York State United Teachers Association, and the Oneida-Herkimer County Retired Teachers Association. He was serving as president of the Claxton Manor Residents' Council. Nick was born on November 24, 1930, in Little Falls, NY, the son of the late Charles and Marie Feeney Kelly. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Military Honors will be offered at the conclusion of the Funeral Mass. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Herkimer. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday (today) from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., in New Hartford. Dear Kelly Family,
Remembering you during the holidays and wanting to let you know that I can remember being in his 5th grade classroom like it was yesterday. I can still picture him so vividly in my mind standing there, telling stories and just being one of the best teachers I ever had. He is one of the reasons I went into teaching.

Dear Kelly Family,
Your dad was the best teacher ever. I loved him. I have often called him and talked to him in the past. I can still hear him laugh the one Mothers Day when I called him to wish him a Happy Mothers Day. I spoke to him after your Mom died and he was broken hearted he loved her very much. I wanted to go and see him at the home but as we know time goes by so fast and I wasn't able to make it. I wanted to tell him that I am a teacher know. I wanted to tell him I can only hope and pray that I make the amazing impact on my students lives that he made in mine. He will be missed. May his soul rest in peace.

I was lucky and honored to have Mr. Kelly as my 5th grade teacher. I remember the stories of his naval service, the field trip to Oneida County Courthouse for some life lessons, and the infamous Halloween villain...Mrs. McDuffie! My condolences to the Kelly family.

Mr. Kelly was the most patient, caring and memorable of teachers. I remember timing how fast we could count to 100; the school play we did written by Kristin M. with Princess Kate S., the great friends I made in that class: Ted F, Bob C, Mark B, Steve R, and many others; the scary Halloween stories (Mrs. McSomebody?), the short lectures in the hallway when we got a little crazy, the figurines on his desk that kids brought to him, his wide stance as if he were still on a ship, the way he made us laugh, the visits to his classroom in later years... Mr. Kelly provided what every kid craves. He made us all feel special and loved.

My condolences to Mr. Kelly's family! He was a wonderful person and teacher. I had the honor to have him as a 5th grade teacher as did my siblings. Years later he remember every student he had by our first names!!!! I have so many fond memories of Mr. Kelly, my thoughts and prayers are with you all! Mr. Kelly was my 5th grade teacher. I was so lucky to have had him as a teacher. I remember that in 4th grade, everyone hoped they would be fortunate enough to be assigned to his class. He had the reputation of being the best 5th grade teacher. Mr. Kelly definitely lived up to his reputation. His genuine caring for his students was touching. He was a gifted teacher, and I still remember him fondly even after over 25 years since I was in his class. I send my sincerest condolences to Mr. Kelly's family.

I was fortunate to be one of Mr. Kelly's students (as was my brother Andy) and vividly remember many of the stories he told. One particular memory of him is that he laughed so hard during one of our class play rehersals that he popped a button on his shirt. He truly cared about all of the kids he taught.

I think of Mr. Kelly every year as I hang the Christmas tree ornament he gave our sixth grade class many years ago. I'll never forget the stories he told of life in other cultures, from his military experiences. He was a great teacher. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I also was in Mr. Kelly's fifth grade class. He was a strong adult figure in my life at that time, and I never felt judged by him. I remember him fondly as kind and feel blessed that he was my teacher that difficult year.
