Robert Brennan Obituary

Robert Brennan, M.D.
Utica
Robert D. Brennan, M.D., died on August 3, 2012, at the age of 87, with his loving wife and family around him. He was born in Utica, the son of Federal Judge Stephen W. Brennan and Ethel (Mara) Brennan. He attended local schools and graduated in 1942 from St. Francis de Sales High School. He attended the University of Notre Dame for a year before entering the United States Navy in 1943. After serving as a pharmacist's mate for three years, he was honorably discharged and returned to complete his studies at Notre Dame. He graduated in 1949 and went on to New York Medical College for four years, followed by three years as a pediatric resident at Rochester General and Strong Memorial Hospitals. In 1956, he began his pediatric practice in Utica; by the 60s and 70s, his was the area's largest pediatric practice. He married Margaret Haley in Utica on the hottest June day in 1949, the start of a long and blessed union of 63 years. They were proud parents of eight much-loved children: Kathleen (Michael) Burton of Trumansburg, NY; Anne (Robert) Carroll of West Hartford, CT; Joan of Utica, NY; Margaret (James) Gribouski of Sutton, MA; Susan Dressler of Johnsonville, NY; Robert (Susan Nicosia) Brennan, Jr., of Austin, TX; Stephen (Susan South) Brennan of Albany, OR; and Martha Brennan of Galway, NY. There are twenty-four grandchildren: Andrew, Daniel, Nora and Stephen Burton, Emily Miner, Timothy and Colin Carroll, Siobhan and Connor Woods, Shaun, Sarah, Eileen and Jeffrey Gribouski, Stephanie, Jackie and Elizabeth Dressler, Natalie and Caroline Brennan, Emma and Maggie Brennan, and Haley, Charles, Max and Evan Morgan. Additionally, there are two great-grandchildren, Keira and Lucas Burton. Dr. Brennan was active in his profession: he was a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and served as president of St. Elizabeth Hospital medical staff, president of the Oneida County Medical Society, chief of pediatrics for combined St. Elizabeth and St. Luke's Pediatrics, and was in charge of pediatric training for the St. Elizabeth Family Practice Program. He was a member of the Utica Medical Club and the Central New York Pediatric Club. Additionally, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post, the Elks Club and the Notre Dame Club of the Mohawk Valley. Dr. Brennan was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of Insight House. He received many awards for his contributions to his profession and his community, including ones from the University of Notre Dame, Insight House and The Good Samaritan Counseling Center. Along with Margaret, he was a long-time parishioner of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, and also served in the funeral ministry at St. Peter's Church in North Utica. In addition to his wife and children, Dr. Brennan is survived by his sisters-in-law, Rosemary Brennan and Lorraine Haley, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Stephen W. Brennan, Jr.; two sisters, Anne Marie Brennan and Harriet Brennan Boehlert; and two sons-in-law, Frank Woods and Christopher Dressler. Dr. Brennan prided himself on being known as a caring, conscientious pediatrician. He gave shots without pain, called all the kiddos "Tiger", spoke to the animals in their ears and could feel their tummies and tell them what they had for lunch. He loved Margaret, his family and Notre Dame. Some of his favorite things were backyard clambakes, Watkins Glen and Ed and Edith, freezing over the lawn to make a skating rink, sunsets at Kayuta Lake, martinis, the Sunday crossword puzzle and life. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Nunn & McGrath Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. from the funeral home and 12:30 p.m. from the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton. In lieu of flowers, please consider a remembrance in Dr. Brennan's name to St. Elizabeth Medical Center or Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The Brennan family extends their gratitude to Dr. Tom Ryan, Dr. Alicia Detraglia and Dr. Christopher Clark for their expert care, kindness and compassion shown to Dr. Brennan over the years. This is a quotation he chose: "And can it be that, in a world so full and busy, the loss of one creature makes a void in our hearts so wide and so deep that nothing but the width and depth of eternity can fill it up?" As a mom and as a professional working along side De Brennan at St.Elizabeth's, I experienced his magic. He left a legacy of adoring children and patients. Thank you Brennan Family for sharing your Dad and husband with rour community. Many have special stories. Mine goes like this. My two little boys and I were waiting for my newborn daughter to be seen. The baby was fussy so I began to nurse her and Dr Brennan walked in, just stood there, tears running down his cheeks and said "this is what it is all about." I have no idea what his day had been like until then but I believe we helped him think about "happy" when he needed it. He gave "happy" to so many. Rest in Peace.......

To Mrs. Brennan and the entire Brennan family,
As many have written in the guest book, Dr. Brennan was our pediatrician until my brothers and I graduated high school and went off to college. Dr. & Mrs. Brennan were also friends of my parents. You touched so many lives - may you rest in peace, Dr. Brennan.

Dear Mrs Brennan and family:

"And can it be that, in a world so full and busy, the loss of one creature makes a void in our hearts so wide and so deep that nothing but the width and depth of eternity can fill it up?"

Yes it can. Sweet, sad tears and love to you all from a former patient and current family doctor in the Pacific Northwest....

Mrs. Brennan and family.
May I express my sympathy for your loss. Doctor was my son's pediatrician from birth in 1963 until graduation in 1981. As a little boy, he was fascinated that only Doctor could see Bozo in his ears, and Doctor never gave a shot that hurt. Only once I called him for an emergency, and he quickly met us at the hospital and arranged an appendix surgery. My son could never imagine changing to another doctor as an adult. But Doctor was firm and funny that he would be glad to give his army physical and then "goodbye." Needless to say Doctor Brennan was a wonderful doctor and gentleman. The medical profession has definitely lost one of its BEST. I am sure that all of his "little patients" have the best of memories.
God Bless you Doctor.

Our children where one of the many patients of Dr. Brennan. I don't remember how I got so lucky to have him. He made me feel confident and comfortable as a mother. I felt like I had Santa Claus as a pediatrician.

Dear Mrs. Brennan and the entire Brennan family,
My deepest sympathies to you all. Dr. Brennan was THE BEST pediatrician ever and I was so disappointed to hear of his retirement the year I became pregnant with my first child. I even told him so shortly after he retired. But I was truly happy for him and wished him a happy retirement. He was just so wonderful to me and my family, even making house calls when we were too ill to come into his office. God Bless you all.

Dear Mrs. Brennan and family, My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Dr. Brennan was my two younger sisters' pediatrician. When my youngest sister was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as a baby, Dr. Brennan showed a lot of kindness and compassion to my parents. I remember my parents appreciated Dr. Brennan taking the time to talk to them and explain the disease and treatment. God bless you all!

Dear Mrs. Brennan, Kathy, Anne, Joan, Marge, Sue, Bob, Steve and Martha,

Prayers and thoughts as you give Dr. Brennan a well-deserved send-off to eternity. What a wonderful man. The obituary is beautiful, but his family is the best tribute ever. All of the Noonans for two generations had the privilege of Dr. Brennan's great (and fun!) medical care (as did at least half of Uitca, I think!) and many Noonans have had and still have the joy of friendship with the Brennan kids. Dr. Brennan's legacy lives on in so many hearts. Be assured of continued prayers.

Aunt Margaret,

Monica and I want you to know that our thoughts are with you and your family. While Uncle Bob was larger than life in his professional accomplishments we feel he is most admired as half of the parenting team ‘Bob and Marg'. Team Brennan has instilled ethics, values, grace and style in three generations of family, and by example, to many others.

Now so many of us are left with decades of satisfying memories. We smile to remember the family gatherings; Clambakes at Greenwood Court, Family Olympics at the lake, Notre Dame Michigan game day, and on and on. To tens of thousands of ‘Doctor Bob's' patients that include me and my boys, his common sense approach to care always put both mothers and children at ease. A legacy of reminiscences that survive within all of us who knew Bob will comfort us at this time.

God's speed Bob Brennan.

Dr. Brennan was my son's doctor from birth to 18yrs old. As a 1st time new Mom,he would answer my many questions and made me feel good about being a Mom. I was doing a good job. And not to worry he would say. He was then an Angel to me and now is an Angel in Heaven. My condolences to all the family and hello to Michael whom I went to grade school with at John F. Hughes.
