Roger VanSlyke Obituary
Utica
Roger H. VanSlyke, Sr., 70, of Utica, passed away Monday, September 5, 2011, at home, with his loving family by his side.
Roger was born on December 11, 1940, the son of Bernard and Olwen (Jones) VanSlyke. He graduated from UFA in 1959. On April 2, 1960, Roger married Lynette Doxie in St. Francis deSales Church. Early in his career of 39 years as a truck driver, he worked with Boss-Linco and retired from ABF Freight Systems.
Roger was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a generous and caring man who always put others first. An avid golfer, bowler and Yankees fan, Roger also loved spending time at Larry's Garage and having breakfast with friends.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Lynette; daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Michael McCoy, Clinton; sons, Roger VanSlyke, Jr., Utica, and Jeffrey VanSlyke, Chadwicks; sister-in-law, Gertrude VanSlyke, Syracuse; in-laws, Diane and Gary Babinic, South Carolina, Jonathan and Sue Doxie, Frankfort, Kevin Doxie, Colorado, and Kari and Curt Johnson, Poland; grandchildren, Jason McCoy, Danielle Casey, Kristy McCoy and her fiance, Jason Wratten, Brandon VanSlyke and Arianna VanSlyke; great-grandchild, Lukas Wratten; several nieces and nephews including James and Kathi VanSlyke, Arizona, Dr. John and Darlene VanSlyke, Utica, and Paul and Sue Schultes, Montana; and many many close friends. Roger was predeceased by his daughter, Lisa D. VanSlyke, in 2009, and two brothers, Bernard and William VanSlyke.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Surridge & Roberts Funeral Home, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will commence at 7 p.m. following visitation. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro.
In lieu of flowers, please consider remembrances in Roger's name to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
The VanSlyke family extends their gratitude to the 6th floor of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, especially Britany and Ashley, for the care and compassion shown to Roger during his stay.

I am so very sorry for your loss! Roger was truly a great and special man who will be forever loved and remembered. I will never forget his smile and humor that put a smile on your face and warmed your soul. It was a distinct honor and pleasure knowing and being about to help care for Roger! May he rest in peace.

Lynette, Lori, Jeff, Roger and family. I am so sad to know that Roger has passed. He was so full of love and laughter, I will miss all of our breakfasts together. As we said for my dad, "May the light of heaven shine on his grave". May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.
