Los Fresnos, TX - Geronimo Ezark Sheldon, a dedicated servant to his community and country, passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 71 surrounded by his loving family. Geronimo, fondly known as Jerry, lived a life marked by selflessness, bravery, and unwavering commitment to duty.
Born to Manuel and Nieves Sheldon, Jerry grew up with a strong sense of duty and honor, values that would define his life's work. He served with distinction in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1975, specializing in Crash and Rescue operations. His service during this time was marked by bravery and valor, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Following his military service, Jerry continued his dedication to public service by joining the Brownville Fire Department, where he served for an impressive 30 years, rising to the rank of lieutenant. His commitment to saving lives and protecting his community was unwavering, and he approached every call with courage and compassion.
In addition to his tenure with the Brownville Fire Department, Jerry devoted himself to the Los Fresnos Volunteer Fire Department for an astounding 42 years. During his tenure, he also served as the fire marshal for the City of Los Fresnos for 34.5 years, where he worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens.
Jerry's life was marked not only by his professional accomplishments but also by his deep love for his family. He was preceded in death by his son Derek Sheldon, his parents Manuel and Nieves Sheldon, his sisters Francis Saucedo, Mary Ramirez, Eva Cantu, Yolanda Galvan, Paula San Miguel, Janie Mortenson, Elizabeth Sellers and his brother Mike Sheldon.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife Janet Sheldon, his sons Jason (Marianela) Sheldon and Jarrett (Debbie) Sheldon, Lalita and Daniel and his cherished grandchildren Leiann, Ethan, Zachary, Ian, Allison, Holly, Olivia, Silus, and Emily. He is also survived by his brothers Crispin (Ans) Sheldon, Freddy (Barbara) Sheldon, Edward (Marvelia) Sheldon, his sisters Rosi (Rey)Sotello, and Pat (Henry) Rivas, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Jerry will be remembered for his bravery, his selflessness, and his unwavering dedication to serving others. His legacy of service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, TX.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Jerry's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 705 S. Longoria St, Port Isabel, TX with interment to follow to Los Cuates Cemetery in Los Fresnos, TX with Military Honors to be held at the graveside.
Pall Bearers- Brownsville Fire Department, Los Fresnos Volunteer Fire Department, Ethan and Zachary Sheldon. Honorary Pall Bearers- Silus Sheldon, Ian Rodrigues, and David Hinojosa. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Los Fresnos Volunteer Fire Department in Jerry's memory.
