Marnie Merrill Obituary
MISSION - Marnie Merrill passed away early December 6 at her home in Mission, Texas.
Born Anna Margery Savage on February 14, 1928, to David and Anna Savage, the family briefly lived in Baltimore, Maryland, while David Savage completed a doctoral degree at Johns Hopkins. Marnie grew up in Starkville, Mississippi, where her father was an English professor at Mississippi State University.
Marnie and her husband, Gene Merrill (deceased), had four children, all of whom survive: David Merrill (Ivianne) of Brownsville; Celia Merrill of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Kate Merrill Burns of Mission, Texas; Amy Pulsifer (David) of Springerville, Arizona.
Marnie is also survived by grandchildren Richardson and Taryn Merrill of Brownsville, Travis and Carson Benn of Albuquerque, and Matthew Burns of Mission.
Marnie graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Zoology. She worked first as a stay-at-home mom and later went back to school for a Masters of Education at UT Pan American while working as a science teacher at Mission Junior High School. She was a founding member of the teaching staff at South Texas ISD Med High in Mercedes, where she taught a variety of science courses, including her favorite, chemistry. The students at Med High elected her Teacher of the Year in 1994.
Marnie was active in the Methodist Church in her hometown of Starkville, as well as in Rio Grande City and Mission, serving as a Sunday school teacher, youth sponsor and in a number of women's circles.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to nursing attendants Marta Rodriguez and Maria Gonzalez for their kindness and comfort each day of their service, as well as to long-time friend, fellow educator and book-sharer Adele Spencer.
Memorial services for Marnie will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 10th, at First United Methodist Church, 1101 Doherty, in Mission, with a reception to follow in the Church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made the First United Methodist Church of Mission.
Services under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.

Marnie was a dear friend and a great educator. I can still hear her lilting Southern drawl as she described the latest book she had read. We had many good times together teaching at STISD and going out after work between 1989 and 1994. The world was a better place because of Marnie! She will be missed.

She was a very thoughtful person and would do anything for her kids in the classroom. I always looked forward to seeing her at school.She would always bend an ear for her Amy's Friends.
