Nicholas Peters Obituary

Harlingen - Nicholas "Nick" Walker Peters, age 17, was made whole again in the eyes of the Lord on October 3, 2016 after a 7 year battle with leukemia.

Nick, the son of Jeff and Judi Peters, was born in Harlingen, TX on January 12, 1999. He was an outstanding young man with a passion for success. Diagnosed with leukemia in October 2009, he used the next couple years building his success and maintaining his rank in the top 2% of his class while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. He developed a profitable business baking/cooking and later turned his sights to technology, developing multiple apps for iPhones still available in the App Store. Nick relapsed twice over the past 7 years prompting a bone marrow transplant at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston in April. While the transplant from his sister proved successful, complications proved too hard on his body and weakened immune system. He passed peacefully surrounded by family after celebrating an early Christmas in PICU.

Nick's journey was followed by thousands on social media as more and more joined his fight building the army of #teamwalkerpete. His battles inspired many and pulled a community together as they celebrated his sense of humor, moved by his strong faith and positive, fun-loving attitude.

Nick is survived by his parents, Jeff and Judi, sisters, Caitlin (21) and Ashley (20), and brother, Noah (12), his maternal grandparents, and paternal grandmother as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at First United Methodist Church, 321 E Harrison Ave, Harlingen at 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to His Grace Foundation, Vannie Cook Children's Cancer Clinic, Alex's Lemonade Stand or St. Baldrick's.

I had the priveledge of coming across this remarkable young man at my job at Texas Children's Hospital. I was immediately inspired by the kind and peaceful nature of his mother as she sat by his side day at night and provided unconditional love and support. As one of Nick's many healthcare providers and Respiratory Therapists, I did everything I could to make my patient as comfortable and happy as could be given the circumstances. No matter how miserable or weak Nick may have been some days, when it came time for his treatments, he never EVER told me no. He showed me the true meaning of stamina and resilience everyday I saw him fight for his life. Even though Nick's mother told me stories of a noncompliant phase he went through, I myself never saw it. I always saw a sweet and precious young man that would have contributed to society in phenomenol ways had God given him the chance. As a fellow mother, my heart shattered to watch Nick's mother look at her son with truly hopeful eyes and yet still see that glitch of pain and harsh reality as we all knew the possible devastating outcome in the days to come. I say that to say this...I never saw that woman show any kind of weakness or surrender to Nick or to his illness. She showed me strength, hope, love, and the faithfulness that I needed to see during the times of my own struggles. She does not know this, but she was an angel to me. The day before Nick met Jesus, I got to meet a whole crew of Nick's wonderful friends and family as they sat with him and celebrated happier times and Nick's favorite holiday. It was Christmas in the ICU that day for Nick Peters. I dreaded walking into his room to say goodbye but as his mother brought me in, I was immediately overcome by a heart warming sweet serenity in that hospital room. I knew right away that God was near and there was no doubt in my mind where Nick would be going soon. A place we can only dream of. I will often think of Nick and his family and especially his absolutely amazing mother that I can only hope to be someday. Know my prayers are with you and you will never be forgotten. Nick has a very special place in my heart. Please contact me, I would LOVE to hear from any of you and keep in touch. 281-914-8080. Much Love and Thanks, Meaghan Sedita, RT

I remember coming abound the Facebook page "Team walker Pete-Nick Peters". I followed his battle with hope. When I didn't see any updates I then looked up the page. As a looked I saw the last update that he had passed. I cried for what might have been an hour and a half. Today October 11th I went to the Funeral ( Celebration of Nick's life) I cried a little but tried not to because I wanted to be strong not just for myself But for the family of Nick. Forever touched,Inspired, loved by many. We will mill you Nick!
