Sarah Brewer Obituary
Sarah
Elizabeth Brewer
HARLINGEN, TX. -On April 1, 1928, the world was given a beautiful soul. On Monday, October 20, 2008, heaven gained the same.
Known as Liz to some, Boots to family, and Granny to all . . . Sarah Elizabeth Brewer was born in Atoka, Oklahoma to Willard William and Alberta (Chitwood) Evans.
``Boots'' attended school through the eighth grade, leaving school to help on the family farm. At age 48, she enrolled in El Centro Community College in Dallas, ultimately graduating from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in education.
She left home to work in Shreveport, LA, later moving to Houston, TX. It was while in Houston that she met and married the love of her life, James Adrian Brewer, in 1952. Married for 52 years, together they lived a life of travel, work and adventure, following his work in commercial construction. After retiring, they moved to the Valley in 1982, living in Port Mansfield and finally in Harlingen with their daughter and her family. Oklahoma, however, was always referred to as ``home.''
James and Liz had one child, Mary Leah (Brewer) Hodge.
Liz was a member of the First Baptist Church, Harlingen, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents: W. W. and Alberta Evans, spouse: James A. Brewer, brothers: Charles, Ed, Walter (Bud), infant Alonzo, and sister: Katherine.
Liz is survived by her daughter: Mary Leah (Bruce) Hodge of Harlingen, TX, granddaughters: Sarah Elaine (Josh) Hulings and Haley Kathleen ``Katie'' of Harlingen, TX, brothers: Willard (Sonny) and Winfred Evans, Atoka, OK, sisters: Susan Blair, Maxine Head, Geraldean Layton, Joyce Layton and Lois Evans, all of Atoka County, OK, numerous nieces and nephews, and her loving caregiver, Rosaura Garcia.
Boots will be remembered for her unexpected sayings, called ``Granny-isms,'' such as ``I just hate it when people make me sin!'' and ``I ain't afraid of no English teacher.'' She was known for her sense of humor, her gentle spirit, kind heart, humility before the Lord, and for loving her family to a fault. She came from a long line of ``good stock,'' and her family is proud of the heritage passed down through their Granny. Though our hearts ache with her loss, we are comforted by the cherished memories of this incredible woman, the joy of knowing her health has been restored, and the excitement of seeing her again, dancing in heaven on the streets of gold.
