Alan Grossman Obituary

Alan Grossman

Thousand Oaks, CA - Alan Grossman, 89, passed away on May 29 at his residence in Thousand Oaks, California, surrounded by friends and family who loved him.

Still in touch wth many of his former students, Alan was a beloved, retired elementary school teacher who taught at the Canejo Valley Unified School Distriict. His love of children and connecting with them along with his unique personality and teaching methods made Alan a memorable and favorite teacher for those lucky enough to have had him as a teacher.

Alan was born and raised in Los Angeles. A fourth generation Los Angeleno, he was a graduate of L.A. High, attended both USC and UCLA, where he graduated with a masters and earned his teaching degree. He served briefly in the army and was stationed at Fort Lee in Virginia. He also lived in Florence, Oregon for over ten years before returning home to Thousand Oaks in 2010.

He will be remembered for his kindness, his jokes, his love of dogs and his generosity. He loved giving small gifts to people—many of them a reflection of his sense of humor. Making other people smile made Alan smile. He was a lover of films and even appeared in a John Landis film, Schlock. He loved Russian films, music and art, especially the art of Eugenia Ivanova, who painted with leaves. He collected all things Scarlet Sails, his favorite book/movie. Alan was a very special person who will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Guy and Larry, his sister Mary Ann and his nephew Rick. He is survived by his niece, Caron, his best friend and honorary family member, Karen Donahue and many special friends who loved and cared for him.

Services will by private. In lieu of flowers please send donations in Alan's name to the ASPCA.

Mr. Grossman was the best teacher I ever had! Because of his firm yet incredibly interesting teaching methods, I went on to study Education and taught young Jr high and high school children English in Israel for over 30 years. I often phoned Mr. G from Israel and we had wonderful chats on the phone. Even more, we hung out often when I was blessed enough to come visit him in 1000 Oaks. See you in heaven Mr. G!! I love you to the moon and back. Love, Linda Prater

I visited Alan often and I’m very very upset that I hadn’t known that he had fallen ill. He was still trucking along like a champ when I saw him last but I have to admit that was about a year ago. We had Exchanged Facebook messages maybe six months ago I had not been aware he had fallen ill. I had Alan for my fourth grade teacher, I’m 44 years old now- that’s how great he was! I stayed in touch with him this whole time he is the only teacher from k-12 that I regularly spoke with and visited. He left a lasting impression on my life and we shared many similar interests. He influenced me to appreciate Little Shop of Horrors, Garfield & The Far Side. He is to blame for my quick wit and dry sense of humor. Alan embodied the true spirit of education and was the teacher you got your kid transferred to if your child got one of the other teachers and not him for fourth grade. He will be greatly missed by me and many others. Mr. Grossman was a class act.
