Albert C. Gates passed away on July 27, 2010.
Mr. Gates was born in Ventura, in August of 1945, and lived most of his life in Ojai. Bert attended Nordhoff Elementary, Monica Ros, San Antonio, Ojai Valley School and graduated from Nordhoff High School in 1964. He graduated from Ventura College and attended Sacramento State College.
Bert was a citrus and avocado grower and an avid gardener. He definitely had a green thumb. He also loved to cook and was very good at it. He was a charter member of the Tuesday Bridge Group and also played duplicate bridge with the Ojai Valley Bridge Club. For a time Mr. Gates was active on and off stage at the Ojai Art Center. He traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Asia, Australia and most of the United States.
He is survived by his three sisters; Pat Cunningham and Gerry Hunsaker of Ojai and Gwen Erickson of Rupert, Idaho; and by his nephews Ned Erickson and Gregg Hunsaker and his nieces Jill Adams and Marla Hunsaker and several great nephews and nieces.
At his request there will be no service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

What a joy to count Bert as a classmate and friend. Last year in October, 2009, Bert graciously invited Jess Long and myself to his home for an afternoon of sharing special memories of San Antonio and Nordhoff school years. Bert's terrific sense of humor remained in full force, and he made it the highlight of my trip to Ojai.He wil be greatly missed. My prayers and my sympathy go out to his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Bert's passing. He was a dear friend and neighbor to my family. He showed such kindness to both my parents in their final days. When my mother was stricken with brain cancer, Bert came over with a beautiful spray of blossoms (he and my mother shared a love for flowers and classical music). Although my mother had lost her ability to walk or talk, Bert sat next to her and talked as if nothing was wrong. I could tell by her Irish eyes she truly appreciated his kindness. Bert honored us by attending my father's 100th birthday party. My father was so pleased to see him. My father and Helen were friends since childhood, so Bert was always special to my father. My father loved to listen to the soothing tunes Bert whistled as he worked in the ranch. It is something I will really miss hearing. Our ranch seems lonelier now without Bert next door. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

I'm so sorry to hear about Albert's passing. I sat next to him in high school at Nordhoff and have a lot of fond memories. We had a great time whispering and laughing. I remember he had a GREAT laugh, very infectious. I'm so sorry for your loss. Jeananette Poulis Parker
