Edward Powers Obituary

Edward "Ted" Carville Powers, 56, succumbed at his home in Oak View on July 23, 2010 after an admirable battle with cancer.

Ted was born on Dec. 4, 1953 in Beach, N.D. He graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in 1972 and then went on to Humboldt State University where he completed his bachelor's degree in geology. Ted worked as a geologist, a profession he loved, for more than 35 years. He was both a Registered Geologist ('89) and a Certified Engineering Geologist ('91). His geological travels took him to many nooks and crannies throughout California, and he spent years studying the geology of Ventura County's coastline, with a special emphasis on the La Conchita area. His observations on the subject are quoted in text books.

Ted never tired of studying or of teaching geology. In fact, there is a whole new group of "rock hounds" at the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) thanks to Ted and the passion he shared with the staff. Many who came in contact with Ted will never look at a rock in the same way again. Ted's family, friends, and colleagues will remember him as an extraordinary person, strong and tough, but also incredibly fair, kind, and generous. He was also a bit of a rascal, with a self-deprecating and bone-dry sense of humor.

He was a true and loyal friend, incredibly intelligent and well read, with an encyclopedic knowledge of geology, history, and engineering -- a major reason why he remained undefeated in Scrabble (and it wasn't close)! Ted loved the outdoors, including hiking and camping with family and friends, and going out on his boat to fish or just to explore. Fearless, sometimes to a fault, Ted loved an adventure, whether it was on a hike on some remote trail, a fishing trip on his boat at night in a sudden storm, his brief career as a hang-glider, or the time he worked as a bouncer in a country western bar in Humboldt during college.

Ted seemed to have more than his fair share of "close calls" - and he enjoyed every one of them and recounting the stories to those lucky enough to hear his tales. Through it all, he kept his sense of humor and his character. Ted will also be remembered for his faithful service as a member of the Ventura County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team for 17 years, from 1993 to 2010.

Ted received a rare honor just a few weeks ago when Sheriff Bob Brooks came to Ted's home to present him with his old Search and Rescue Sheriff's badge - the equivalent of retiring an old pro athlete's number!

Ted is survived by his mother, Yvonne; three daughters, Katy, Claire, and Janie; a grandson, Wyatt; one sister, Suzanne; three brothers, Tom, Jim, and Mike; and his best friend and companion through good times and bad, Adrienne. Ted wanted to be sure that a special "Thanks" was relayed to the skilled and extraordinarily caring doctors, nurses, and staff at the VCMC Oncology Center, Hospital, and Emergency Department.

In addition, we have all appreciated the warmth and gentle care provided by the Livingston Memorial's palliative and hospice care team. In the course of Ted's treatment and care, VCMC's Dr. Bryan Wong, Dr. Evan Slater, Dr. Javier Romero, Dr. Jeremy Schweitzer, and Livingston 's Jean Marie Tantalo, RN, became extended family members. Their collective professionalism, concern, and compassionate care made Ted's last year as fulfilling and dignified as it could possibly have been.

Ted's friends and family are forever grateful. As he wished, Ted's ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony in August. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be sent to the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation, in memory of Ted Powers, at 2323 Knoll Drive, Suite 313, Ventura, CA 93003 (Tax #95-6096141).

Plotting up aquifer test data this morning when Ted's name just popped into my head. I often think about Ted, and miss him, when I'm out and about doing field work. It's those times when I say his name out loud and think how good it would be to have him with me; how much he would enjoy it. You may be gone from us Ted, but we remember you well.

Scrabble caught my eye; Ted was profoundly strong with the written word coupled with his study an understanding of geology-WOW! I think about my friend often. My mom "Queenie" Williams told me before she died that Ted was in her mind often. He is on many minds. Upon re-reading Ted's well written obituary, I'm reminded of the many facets of Teds life and the many people that admired and respected him.
I was honored by Ted when he was my best man when Cindy and I were married; he was a special friend to my dad, Tom. From 4th grade on we had a close friendship. Ted is missed.

Remembering you again, Ted. You and your entire 1972 class at St. Bonny's was the most memorable class - yours was the first. Now, still teaching here at USC 50 years later.

To the Powers Family-I'm sorry I'm late here as time just escaped me. I'm so sorry to hear of Ted's passing. we were very good friends at SBHS and I remember Ted as if it were yesterday. I remember the camping trips up in Sespe, taking our cars where they really weren't allowed and the Water Skiing trips from Lake Piru to Lake Shaver in the mountains east of Fresno. We had a blast being carefree and silly and by reading Ted's Obit, it appears he hasn't changed a bit with his dry sense of humor and sometimes silly demeanor. I'm sorry for your loss Suzanne. Years ago you and Ted were close and I'm sure that hadn't changed. Again, Sorry to the whole Powers' family and may time provide a healing mechanism to help you through the heaviness in your hearts.

I know through Mike that Ted was truly an inspiration to those who knew him. I lost my wife to this same disease a few months ago. Katy, Claire, Janie and Adrienne..... I know that nothing anyone can say can replace Ted, but know he will always be in your hearts. Every special moment in your live's from this point on, you will think of and therefore share it with Ted. Through such thoughts he will continue to be a part of your family and lives. God bless and know the thoughts of many in your community are with you.

Ted and I spent a great deal of time together during the initial landslides at La Conchita while with the Upper Ojai Search and Rescue. Our job was escorting the Gas company representative to each of the homes making sure the gas was turned off. We were told that if we heard 3 blasts from a horn that the mountain was again sliding towards the town. Little did we know that the train would decide to blow it's horn 3 times when entering the town of La Conchita. Ted and I scrambled over each other getting out from under the house when we heard the blast. We often would laugh about who got out faster.I think it was Ted.

Oh my Teddykins,
When I first meet you, I'll admit, you were a little intimidating. Then after a day or two you showed your true colors. You were funny, kind, and absolutely lovable. We missed you here at Padre but were glad for the occasional visits. My heart goes out to your family. You will be missed.

Since 1963, I'll miss this friendship -at Loma Vista Elementary, Mr. Martins 4th grade summer school, hunting rabbits and dodging Rocky, Camping-boating-and catching crawfish at Lake Cachuma, golf, well logging, geology, Ted was my best man at my wedding to Cindy in 1979, then there was freindship over sushi lunches, trading books, rocks, and conversation, I'll miss my friend, Ted.

The world has lost a true original. Ted was a tough man with a gentle soul and a kind spirit. He was a brilliant person but always humble. And he had the most unique, entertaining and quirky sense of humor of anyone I've ever known. Most of all, Ted was a wonderful friend and I feel very fortunate to have known him.
