Son of Leslie "Dugan" and Neva Moore, was born August 19th, 1939 in Ventura, Ca. He passed peacefully in his sleep on December 15th, 2014, after a 7 year battle with cancer.
In 1964, Gary met his future wife Norma and they became engaged after only 8 days. Gary and Norma would have been married 50 years this coming April.
Besides Norma, Gary is survived by daughter, Elisabeth, son, Matthew, and 3 adoring granddaughters, Victoria, Marisa and Danica.
Gary was predeceased by his brother Donald in 2012.
Gary spent his entire childhood in Foster Park. After graduating from Ventura High School in 1957, he proudly served his country for 8 years in the United States Air Force. After leaving the military, Gary graduated from Fresno State University. He was hired by the Ventura Police Department in 1968 and was promoted to Sergeant in 1972. Gary retired in December 1991, after nearly 24 years with the department.
Gary and Norma blessed their kids and granddaughters by taking them on camping trips to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National parks along with the Eastern Sierras. Gary and Norma explored much of Western Canada, from the Canadian Rockies to the Vancouver coast. Gary asked that a portion of his ashes be spread where he took his favorite hiking and stream fishing trips: Lee Vining Canyon, Saddlebag Lake Loop and Mount Dana.
Gary enjoyed getting up at the crack of dawn to go play 18 holes of golf as often as he could. He continued to do this up until the last few months of his life.
Honoring Gary's wishes, no memorial services will be held. He strongly believed that those who have fought for our country should never be forgotten, so in lieu of flowers, he asked to please make any memorial donations in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. (WoundedWarriorProject.org)
A quote from a good friend and fellow Police Officer: "Such wisdom, humor, patience, AND humble. A rare combination to possess all, but Gary did.
"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8 NIV)

Gary or Sgt.Moore As I knew him best had started on the department a year ahead of me and he was there when I left in 1990.Gary was one of those supervisors that seemed to fit the military description of "Sarge" Gary had the right personality to be a supervisor. Gary had the ability to command your respect without ever uttering "Do it cause I say to" "Sarge" always showed up at hot calls but remained in the observer position which gave those of us that had been doing the job day after day the feeling he respected our judgment. Gary was respected and admired by his fellows. He will be sorely missed.

To Stg. Gary(Sniffer)Moore. Rest in peace. You were the best supervisor a officer like myself could have. Our days at the VPD were great.

Well, it's taken this long to compose myself enough to share this. Gary was more than just a Sgt. He was so approachable and knowledgeable that it was easy to add him to my role model list, knowing all the while I could never even hope to duplicate his standing. I would be proud to be 1/4th his abilities. His quiet comments typically contained elements of humor, insight, instruction and guidance within a single utterance. He knew when to involved, and when to let us find our way and grow. And yes, Gary was a target of my practical jokes more than just a few times. From filling his locker with range golf balls to the infamous found Titleist ball photo prank, he took it well, laughing as hard as we were. Because I think, he knew we loved him that much. From 1800 miles away, I feel his absence. I will always be in your debt, Sgt. Moore.

My prayers and thoughts are with Gary and his family As a fellow Ventura Police Officer in the 1980s , I can remember his sense of humor in some bad situations. Thank God for the humor, but also his supervision of a shift and the multiple events happening adding to the heart pumping. We will meet again in the big briefing room in the sky. Stay Safe on the Streets. Mike Ewens

So sorry to hear of Gary's passing. My love and prayers go out to your family. Gary and I are distant cousins. Neva was my Grandmother's Niece and when I stayed with her as a small child Neva and Dugan visited "Aunt Mollie" frequently. The end a beautiful family. Sincerely, Molly Emery Burgett

I second what bob and Darlene say, Gary and Norma are the neighbors that can't be described, so wonderful and fun throughout the decades on Dayloma. Gary and Norma were so kind to me and I remember so many great conversations and hearing about all the trips and adventures. Gary was amazing and admirable, I'm so sorry.

Norma, I am so sorry to hear of Gary's passing. He was not only a great cop but a great supervisor; professional in every way. I miss his sense of humor! I also miss my time with you in master's swimming at Ventura College. I left a card in your mailbox with my phone number. Please call me any time. Sincerely, #127

Gary and Norma have been good friends and neighbors for many years. Always able to stop on a walk and talk a while. They shared their trips with us and you could feel their love of nature and their love of each other. Gary will be missed.
