Maxine Bicknell Obituary

Maxine Bicknell passed peacefully in her home on July 17, 2014. The family recently celebrated Maxine's 100th birthday in Westlake Village California, her home for the past 32 years. Maxine was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa on July 6, 1914, the daughter and only child of Mabel and Virgil McBrayer.

Early in her childhood the family moved to Southern California where Maxine's father owned and operated a restaurant. In 1930 at the age of 15 she married Richard A. Bicknell. The two were best friends, with their marriage lasting until Richard's passing in 1991. Their only son Richard A. Bicknell II was born in 1931. Maxine excelled as a homemaker and also as a bread winner during her husband's tour of duty in the second world war. Her contribution to the war effort was working in the aircraft industry at night building fighter planes. By day she and little Richie would take care of their small urban ranch in Downey tending to the horse T-Bar and the cow Buttercup. She loved to tell stories about those difficult but heartwarming days. Maxine also worked at Columbia records for several years as a secretary.

Maxine enjoyed several years of retirement with her husband Richard. During which time they spent in Palm Springs and traveled the West, stopping to fish every chance they could.

Maxine was blessed with exceptional health. After most doctor appointments she would exclaim " they just can't find a thing wrong with me". Maxine lived independently with very little assistance until recently, always interested in current events and ready for lively conversation.

The family can take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her husband Richard and son Richard A. Bicknell II.

Maxine is survived by her Daughter-in-law Sylvia, Grandchildren Melinda, Richard III, and Kenneth, Great Grandchildren Ryan and Dane and Great Great Grandson Jake.

A Funeral Service will be held at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Chapel in Westlake Village on Friday May 25th at 10am.
