It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Paul Robb Latourell born March 15, 1962 in Ontario, Canada died in Denpasar, Bali February 17, 2014.
Born to Ralph and Myrna (Robb) Latourell and spent his early years on the Latourell family farm in Kemptville. In 1967 the family immigrated to Ventura County, settling in the Ventura Pierpont neighborhood. He graduated University California at Santa Barbara. In the early 1980's Paul's love of surfing drew him to the Island of Bali, Indonesia, eventually to become an expatriate. For 10 years he operated a seasonal Christmas store Mustika Gifts featuring Balinese arts and crafts in numerous Ventura County Mall's. Paul's spirit of generosity helped many of his Balinese friends with employment and education. He taught English language to local hotel workers and did volunteer work for the World Health Organization.
In Bali Paul was a well-known community activist involved in fund-raising for a Kuta medical clinic treating HIV/AIDS patients and Yayasan Bali Peduli - a foundation providing assistance and care to HIV/AIDS patients. Paul's name in HIV/AIDS world in Bali means: sincerity, integrity, equality and humility. To the community who provides funding for the clinic through an annual dinner party, they only participate with the fundraising events because they trusted Paul overseeing the funding implementation. Paul touched so many and worked so hard to make sure Bali was HIV free.
Survived by his father Ralph (Patty) Latourell, sisters, "Rose" Lynn husband Rob Garven, Karen Latourell and stepfather Jerry Knott. Paul was preceded in death by his mother Myrna Robb 2009.
A memorial gathering is planned for March 16 at The Knights of Columbus, 39 Figueroa St, Ventura at 3 p.m. Donations in Paul's memory may be made to Bali Peduli via Rotary Club Ubud Foundation website: balipeduli.org or email [email protected]

Dear Ralph, Patty, Rose & Karen,
We are so very appreciative my husband Gary & myself were able to attend the memorial service for Paul, and bring the flower arrangements to the venue.
The service & everyone who spoke remembering Paul were all touchingly beautiful.
I am very grateful I was able to assist your family in my own significant way, & Karen thank you for honoring my request. xo
Below is my personal message to your family that I now share with all who Loved Paul:
I have been grief stricken since hearing of your (ours, anyone who knew & Loved Paul) tragic loss.
Paul was one of my "runners" at Casa Maria, along with Shrimpo. My daughter's daycare provider was JoMama of Pierpont. Often after working a late shift I would go to Paul's, it was so close to Jojo's, and we would talk, sometimes for hours. He knew I hated waitressing and once he told me of a story of how his Mom didn't tip. I was horrified, but then he told me why.
Paul knew I could change my life if I would go back to school. How satisfying to be able to tell him in person years later just how profoundly he touched my life. There were other friends who also encouraged me to continue my education, making the tapestry of Love that has supported me over the years, but Paul has always stood out in my mind & heart.
During those chats I also learned just how wholesome & just Paul was at such a young age. He would share with me of others behaving in dubious ways, and although younger than I, he opened my eyes.
And, anyone in need, I include the link that accompanies the grief booklet I gave to you, written by my long-time best friend of over 40yrs.

I send thoughts & prayers to each of you for sweet time, compassion, understanding, truth, and if at all possible, peace of minds & hearts.
From my own heart,
Karen (Miller) Bednorz

I have not seen Paul since I moved from Ventura in '79. I remember him well and he was always a good sole. It seems that he left a positive footprint on this planet and we need more folks like Paul. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ralph and Rose.

Paul was one of a kind. A special person. Someone you would never forget, once you met him. A wonderful kind and endearing man who left too soon. His laughter was contagious. His smile, hugs and humor where just who he was. Wonderful. Living next door to him in Foster Park as he grew from a late teenager to the man he became was a delight I got to share with the family. I love you all . Ralph, Patty, Rose, Karen, I am here for you. You have been part of my extended family and I know how hard this is for you all. Paul was a great human being who cared so much for others, which showed in his humanitarian work. I love you all. May he rest in peace and be in a place of eternal love, joy and happiness.

Paul, I will always remember you smiling. I will always remember your presence; it is as if you filled every room you walked into with joy, your smile a contagious all-consuming whirlwind of delight. So supportive, so innovative and so humble in your approach to living-out-loud in your life. Paul knew how to reach people just by being himself. He lived beyond the boundaries of a mundane life; he did it with courage and strength, softness and light, a perfect blend of humanity, humility, spirit and pride. I did not know the last time I saw you, would be the last time I saw you… I thank you now full-hearted for the hug; it was so casual a moment filled to the brim with love. You leave behind a legacy of always bearing gifts, the gift of friendship, support, humor; compassion and kindness are at the top of the list…
You will be missed deeply and remembered sweetly.

Ralph,Patty,Jerry,Rose,Rob and Karen. Please know that we are thinking of you all and praying for your burden of sorrow to lighten by knowing what an impact Paul had on all the people that he met. He had close family ties and a strong circle of friends.
Paul always had a way of making the person he was talking to know that they had his interest and undivided attention.
I will be thinking of Paul on his birthday and the next day as you gather to remember his life, lived his way. I will miss him with that quick smile and quick wit.
His life will not be defined by this tragic end but in the tragedies he prevented by his tireless work in Bali.

Ralph, Patty, Rose and Karen...my heart goes out to you at this time. We all loved Paul, eve if we hadn't seen much of him the last few years. I will always remember his present to me when he was at the Farm and just a little guy..he reached in his little pants pocket and pulled out a handful of earthworms, holding them out to me...I still hate earthworms.

Paul was a friend of my entire family, and his tragic death is a shock to us all. To my sisters he was the bestest of the best friend. To my children he was "The Cookie Monster" who was gonna get them and tickle them! I remember his laugh and his big ole smile. Always bright. Always full of sunshine. Will miss you so much Paul. Prayers and love to your entire family.

The world has lost a truly fine and special person. The sun was brighter when Paul was present and life was just better. A free spirit, great friend, wise man, wicked wit, kind hearted soul. I met Paul in high school, he helped me move to New York City, and we had many great times together....hanging out and traveling to amazing places and having great adventures you can laugh about forever. I had so much respect for the work Paul in Bali, admired the life be made in Indonesia, and will deeply Mis his great warmth and kindness. My heart goes out to everyone who loved him... Family and family of friends. Love you forever Paul.....fly wih the other angels.

I never really know the right words to say in a situation like this, but I know Paul was a very good man with a loving and thankful heart. He got along with everyone. I always had fun dancing with him when our friends across the street would have gathering at their place. He was a good dancer. I also enjoyed his store Mustika Gifts when it be at the Pacific View Mall. He always sold such beautiful things there. I miss you Paul.

Oh Paul. It was such a shock to hear of your tragedy. You were one of the most non violent happy people I ever knew. Rose, I'm truly saddened by your loss. We had so many good times on Greenock Lane and Foster Park. Moonlight surfing and all of the parties. Every time I think of you I will remember your cherubic happy face. XO

Paul Latourell had the biggest and best personality of almost anyone I can imagine. Since he moved to Bali our time together was once a year at most, but during that times we caught up he made you feel like he was your closest friend-the stories and secrets he told you were in such a conspiratorial tone, you were sure they were for your ears only. Since I was in 8th grade and he in 7th, he was my angel on one shoulder,my devil on the other, the perfect blend of really bad ideas and outrage at how the world treated the poor and marginalized. I regret all the years we were not close, and all the years where I will never see him again.

A kind and gentle soul with just the right amount of crazy, always smiling or laughing. I believe that now his soul will spread out and keep making this world a better place to be....but I wish he could have stayed with us, in this world. I'll miss you Paul, this world will miss you
