Philip Sanchez Obituary

Philip J. Sanchez, DDS

Camarillo, CA

After giving Philip J. Sanchez the gift of spending the perfect Christmas with his family, our Lord took him suddenly the following day to His celebration in Heaven. He was welcomed by his father Fidel and brother Michael.

Philip was born in Oxnard, CA on September 23, 1954 to Fidel and Lupe Sanchez, the third of their six children. They instilled in him the importance of working hard, obtaining an education, and caring for his family. Philip started working at the age of 13, picking lemons to pay for his education. He attended the El Rio schools and Santa Clara High School. He received his high school degree from Rio Mesa, his associate degree from Ventura College, his bachelor's degree in Human Biology from Stanford University, and his master's and doctoral degrees from UCSF Dental School.

It was his childhood dream to become a dentist and return to serve his community in Oxnard. Upon graduation from dental school in 1982, Philip returned with his wife Julie, who he met at Stanford, and started his general dental practice from scratch. He treated all his patients like family. His patients lovingly called him the best dentist for his quality of care, honesty, and perfectionism. They also enjoyed his great sense of humor.

Philip devoted his life to his family, and worked hard to provide his children with the opportunity to pursue their dreams. He saved for their college from the day each was born. He was extremely proud of all his children's achievements. Andrea (BS in Biology from Stanford, MD degree from USC) is a nephrologist; David (BS in Biology and Organic Chemistry from Cal Lutheran University) is a dental student at De La Salle University; Michelle (BS in Psychology from UCSB, MS in Clinical Psychology from Notre Dame de Namur University) is a clinical psychologist; and Alysia (BA in Political Science from Stanford, JD from Boston College Law) is an attorney.

Philip wanted to show his children the beauty of art, history, and culture. He traveled with his family to 18 countries and over 30 states. In their empty nest stage, Philip and Julie enjoyed traveling to visit their children, attending Stanford football and basketball games, and wine-tasting.

The most recent highlight of Philip's life was becoming a grandfather. He utterly adored and spoiled his granddaughters Eva (age 3) and Savanna (age 8 months). They made his life complete.

Philip is survived by his wife of 38 years, his four children, daughter-in-law Heather, and two grandchildren; as well as his mother, brothers Tomas and Paul, sisters Susan and Kathie, and a large extended family.

He will be forever in our hearts. We will always love him and deeply appreciate all that he did for us.

On Thursday, January 7th, visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Santa Clara Mortuary, with the rosary service to follow at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Ventura. On Saturday, January 9th, the funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, with the burial to follow at Santa Clara Cemetery.

Dear Julie and family. I am sorry to hear about Dr. Sanchez passing. I found out not to long ago he passed away and am deeply sadden, he was a great person. I am glad I got to see him last month, now who will I tell my fun stories too? My greatest memory of him was his Rebelde era and how much he was into that pop group. It was always a pleasure to see Phil at SB-VC Dental Society events. He was an outstanding representative of dentistry in terms of his commitment to his patients and his kind personality. His pride and love for his wife and children was always evident. I read the sincere expressions of sorrow already made by Drs. Berger, Clark, and other dentists in this book, and I'm sure all our other society members join me in expressing their heartfelt sorrow for your loss. He was a great colleague and an outstanding example of what a professional is.

It was awe-inspiring today to join with the Sanchez clan in celebration of Phil's life. Phil was known among our dentist peers as an extremely talented dentist. We appreciated and loved him for his kindness, good humor, integrity and humility. His patients adored him. I have long been proud to have this fine man as a colleague, but never more so than today when privileged to appreciate him through the eyes of his family. Julie and kids, we were there today to support you, but instead you lifted us all up and we were blessed.

I am absolutely heartbroken. I just can't wrap my brain around the fact that my precious Dr. Sanchez is gone. He was my dentist since I was a child and I grew up knowing him. He was the kindest, gentlest man I've ever met. He loved to make me laugh and always understood what I was saying, even with my mouth full of dental instruments. I can still hear him say, "Did you hear that Julie"! I feel honored to have known him. Julie, my heart and prayers go out to you and the family. I love you.

He memory will live in our hearts and his passion for his profession and family was untouchable. I embrace you with the love, faith and sorrow for your pain. Dear Julie & Sanchez Family,

It took days for the reality to sink in that Philip had passed. Philip was more than just a dentist to my family and I. We built a relationship with him and the staff. I still remember the office on A Street when I was a little girl. Then I had the pleasure of taking m daughter there, and when we moved to Texas you gave me a hard time. We would always make our appointments around the holidays when visiting. You were more than a Dentist, you were a friend and mentor to both my husband and I and it is because of you that we both finished our education. Thankfully, Iliana and I got to see you in December and you were so proud that she was going to be attending Sana Clara High School. You will forever be in our thoughts and Prayers.

Dear Julie and family: Graham, Laura, and I are heartbroken and in great shock. We are having an extremely difficult time processing this loss. The world is not the same now. What an outstanding human being we have been blessed to share our lives with. Such kindness, class, humor, professionalism, and depth. Philip was an important part of the fabric of our little family's life, and we will suffer his absence. We are grateful to have the ability to keep his presence fiercely alive in our memories and hearts--such a larger than life itself human being with a great passion for his profession and family, Philip is and will always be one of the liveliest spirits in our souls. We embrace you with love, peace, and the strength to go on each day, Julie, and we are so very very sorry. We have thought of you non-stop. With love, the Gurneys

Grandpa Philip we will miss you greatly. You loved us as much as a Grandpa could. You spoiled us rotten and showered us with love that we will never forget.
We will miss the late night, "party party parties", where we always overindulge in popcorn, cheese and ice cream.
We will miss picking lemons off the tree and helping you clean the pool.
You taught us what a $5 bill was and how to save for our future.
Our time with you was too short but we know you are in heaven watching over us Grandpa Philip.
You will forever live in our hearts.
Love your grand babies,
Eva Marie & Savanna Ray Sanchez

Dear Julie, Alysia, Andrea, David, and Mitchie, Dr. Paul Sanchez and all Family Members,

My heart goes out to you and all of your family members. I only knew of Dr. Phlip Sanchez through his brother Dr. Paul Sanchez, my doctor, and other dentists. Know that my thought and prayers are with you. The video on the website was beautiful and along with all the heartfelt condolences written, they give a true picture of who I always heard Dr. Philip Sanchez was all about. Bless each of you and Dr. Philip Sanchez. To each of you:

Is That You?

Is that you?
The falling star in the night
So pure, and so bright.

Is that you?
The breeze gently blowing through my hair
Telling me that you are still there.

Is that you?
The golden ball rising in the East
Bringing hope that with each new day, the sorrow will ease.

Is that you?
Setting in the West
Bringing a night of peace and rest.

Is that you?
Who dries my tears
As I gaze toward my future years.

Is that you?
That gives me strength to carry on
Even though you are gone.

Is that you?
Yes. It is you. You are always with your family.

His memory lives on in your hearts and minds.

Sincerely,
Yvonne Fortier

Julie and family,

Joyce and I send our deepest condolences to you with the passing of our good friend Phil. In addition to being a good friend, he was an exceptional human being.

From way back when we were roommates that eventful senior year when the two of you first met, to more recent times as we celebrated so many Stanford football victories together, the times spent with you and Phil are cherished memories.

I may be committing a faux pas by calling him Phil when everyone else calls him Philip, but Phil is how I knew him back in the Stanford days. Old habits are hard to break, and I hope you will forgive me.

Phil/Philip will be dearly missed.

Dr. Sanchez was one of the kindest fellow dentists I came accross in my time het in Oxnard/Camarillo. We would run into each other from time to time @ the local Starbucks on Las Posas with his kind wife. I admired him because he cared about his patients and we shared the same ethics in practice. He never took shortcuts...did things right and never met anyone who didn't love him. He was one of the kindest dentists here and our dental family will miss him.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
