Glenn McMillan Obituary

Glenn McMillan

The 1957 College of the Sequoias State Championship Baseball Team has lost its Centerfielder. Glenn McMillan passed away on July 30th in the home he lived in for fifty-five years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce A. McMillan, brother John McMillan (Nancy), sister Joyce L. McMillan, and children Stuart (Vicki), Ms. Terry Slinde, and Ryan (Deborah). Glenn was also the proud grandfather of Amanda Yagle (Ron), Andrew McMillan (Deidre), Kevin McMillan (Ceslie), Daniel Slinde, Shawna Slinde (Trevor Jones), Nicholas Begin, Courtney Begin, and eight great-grandchildren.

Glenn Edwin McMillan was born on June 18th, 1936, in Stamford, Texas to J.B. and Jewell McMillan. The family migrated to California in the 1940's and eventually settled in Visalia. Glenn attended Webster School, Sierra Vista Junior High School and was part of the first graduating class of Mt. Whitney High School in 1955. While at Mt. Whitney, he excelled in both football and baseball, and met his future wife, Joyce Betterton, as she was the baseball team's scorekeeper. The two were married on September 15th, 1956. Glenn continued his education and athletic career at College of the Sequoias where he was a member of that school's only State Championship Team in Baseball. He was proud of that accomplishment and remained close to his teammates as he participated in the team's many reunions. Glenn was recently inducted into the COS Athletic Hall of Fame as part of that championship team.

After COS, Glenn began his career in route sales with Frank Marciochi's Associated Tobacco and Candy Co. before working for Coca Cola. He eventually went to work for Laura Scudder's where he stayed for over 25 years and was one of their top salesmen and eventually became a supervisor. Glenn was very outgoing and a real character and made many friends on the job. He was also a professional and a very dedicated and hard worker. This was the greatest gift he passed on to his children as he used to say "there is no substitute for hard work." Glenn also worked as an independent contractor for Sara Lee and Home Run Pies and finished his working career with the Nickell's Payless grocery store chain.

Glenn passed away within nine days of his longtime friend and coaching partner, Don Alfano. Together, they coached Little League in the 1960's, Babe Ruth and American Legion in the 1970's, and at Golden West High School in the 1980's. They taught many athletes the fundamentals of the game of baseball and how to look and act like a ballplayer and play the game with hustle and desire. Because of this they had many winning teams and formed many lifelong relationships with their players. Glenn also enjoyed the time that he spent coaching with Bob Geels and Art Browning.

Another of Glenn's favorite pastimes was camping with friends and family. He camped many places in his life, but his favorite place was Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon, or "Cedar Gap", as he and his friend Bill Milam used to refer to it. Glenn spent many vacations and Holiday weekends there. Being in the mountains was the one place that he could relax and have fun.

Take two and hit to right, Glenn. We're going to miss you.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Joyce, Stuart and Ryan I am very sorry to hear about your loss and my prayers are with you. Great times growing up a few house away from the family in the 1960s and 1970s. He, Joyce and the boys always had something going on and were fun to be around. A really nice family and good people to grow up around. All my best to you all, Rock

Glenn was a great friend to my Dad. They enjoyed many years coaching together and touched the lives of many young men. They will be missed but not forgotten. I will cherish all the times I got to talk baseball with Glenn. He was a baseball book of knowledge.

Deborah McMillan wife of Ryan ad daughter-in-law of Glenn, I met Glenn in the summer of 1998. Ryan and I had asked Glenn and Joyce to go to a Smokey Robinson concert at the Tulare country fair and from that night on I knew this was a family I knew I wanted to be a part of !!! A couple of my fondest memories of Glenn were as a family though... Every Easter Thanksgiving and Christmas Joyce would always make this thing called egg delight I wasn’t sure what all went into making it but it was awesome and she almost always made two pans of it, because it was so good there would be fights over who got the last piece. And then there was this other thing Glenn did not like getting or giving cards for like birthdays or Christmas. He just thought it was a waste of money to spend on a card...Anyway, so I thought to myself since he didn’t like us to buy him a Christmas Card I’d make him one...So I took a two ply bounty paper towel do got a black magic marker an wrote on it Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Glenn love Deb and Ryan ♥ !!! He laughed and laughed and told Ryan and I was the best Christmas card he’s ever gotten. And then One other great moment that I remember with Glenn is He and Joyce invited us over for dinner and to watch the 2010 World Series.
With the game scoreless between the Giants and the Rangers, going into the seventh-inning I was listening to the game on my radio and Ryan and his parents for watching it on TV. Edgar Renteria came up to bat and hit a three run homerun I was doing everything to keep from blurting it out and Joyce looked at me and smiled I knew then she knew something good happened and as he rounded the bases Glenn and Ryan were jumping up and down like two little boys that had just gotten their first baseball mitt. Needless to say the Giants went on to win the 2010 World Series !!! To this day I am so very happy Ryan and his Pop as he calls him were able to watch all three of the Giants World Series together !!! And as I recall on November 21 2015 the night I left Glenn and Joyce’s house for the last time as I was leaving to move back to Oklahoma both Joyce and Glenn gave me a hug and Glenn said take care of my boy Deb ♥. Take two and hit to right Pop

I worked opposing routes at Frito Lay in Visalia. When I found myself pitted against Glen all I heard was how he knew every store owner, every owners son, coached many fathers and sons and was a legend in the route sales business. I pushed hard for years to gain rack space, a display or a clip strip in a store. Over the years I had my wins, but seldom felt a clear victory over this power house of a man. Respected, feared, loved and admired by not only the businesses, but the families and neighbors of the community. After leaving Laura Scudders our paths crossed in the parking lot of Best Buy Mkt where he walked over to my truck and made a point of telling me how I had out sold and out rapported him in his own town. His words were "You kicked my butt, but you did it fairly". I'll never forget that compliment or that gesture of praise and encouragement. Always a coach, always a teacher and always a great friend. Thank You Glen McMillan. Would have enjoyed one more cup of coffee with you.

We have always said in our family that we all got our “smarta**” from my dad, but I think he might have gotten it from spending time with Uncle Glenn...I know I picked up a little of it!
We will miss you Uncle Glenn!

With one fork, four people finishing an apricot pie during a late-night drive to Cedar Grove: camping trips; daytrips (usually at night) to see Sandy Koufax pitch to Willie Mays; card games; family celebrations. These are just some of the wonderful memories with a wonderful man that even these Dodger fans loved. The world will not be the same without Glenn.

That was a great read and so glad to have. He sounds like a wonderful man and I am happy to be (somehow) related.
Cedar grove has been a favorite place of many in our family, that I know for sure!
