Barbara Birge Obituary

Barbara Birge

Amherst, MA - Barbara Birge was born in Northampton, Massachusetts to Albert and Ruth Birge on October 9, 1939. She grew up in Leverett and Amherst with her five sisters, Pauline, Elaine, Dorothy, Jean, and Nancy, and her brother, Robert. After high school, Barbara accepted a position as an educator at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts, permanently relocating to the city. Barbara would remain at Perkins for the next fifty years, continuing as a volunteer after her retirement as a full time educator. She was greatly loved and admired by both her co-workers and the many students she touched over the years, forming lasting bonds with many of them. A lifelong believer in the power of education, during her career at Perkins, Barbara initially earned her Bachelor's degree in education and then went on to earn additional higher education degrees and certificates from both Lesley and Harvard university. In her time away from teaching, Barbara loved visiting family located throughout New England, all of whom felt a deep connection to her. In addition, she spent time traveling and experiencing other places and cultures, including a trip to Amsterdam which she enjoyed recounting to friends and loved ones over the years.

In 2021, Barbara moved back to western Massachusetts to be closer to her family. Barbara is survived by her sister, Nancy Sloat, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held on the morning of Friday, October 3, at Douglass Funeral Home in Amherst, Massachusetts. There will be a visitation from 10:00-11:00, followed by the memorial service at 11:00.

I knew Barbara for more than 50 years. She and I worked together for many years; I observed her many successes . She was determined and dedicated to learning so that she would be able to work effectively with her students. She loved each student and always knew exactly what to do and how to respond. She and I Shara great trip to Amsterdam. She was in awe and shared her experiences with so many friends.
Barbara will be remembered for her kind and gentle nature.
Thanks B for mentoring me.

My condolences to your family. I worked with Barbara at Perkins in the Deafblind program and remember the wonderful relationships she had with her students. I remember one in particular that would ask for Barbara by name with such joy. Those connections are what I remember about Barbara.

My deepest sympathies to all of Barbara's family. I had the pleasure of working with Barbara at Perkins School for the Blind since 1985. She was a wonderful teacher, mentor and friend. Her dedication to her students was immense. She loved teaching and it was evident every day! I am proud to have known her and learned from her example. Again, my condolences to the entire family.
