Hamilton Timbrell Obituary

Hamilton "Tony" Timbrell

Newport, NH - Hamilton Cooke Timbrell (Tony) passed away on June 17th, 2024 at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Tony grew up in Hackettstown NJ and went on to attend the University of Missouri-Rolla, Schools of Mines and Metallurgy where he received a degree in Civil Engineering. After college, he joined the Army Corps of Engineers and served in Vietnam building bridges. He received the Bronze Star for his distinguished service. Following the war, he returned to the United States and worked as a Project Engineer for the State of NH, designing and supervising the construction of the bridges on Interstate 89 in Sullivan County. The majority of his career was spent at Dufresne-Henry, a consulting engineering firm in Springfield, Vermont. Tony worked on hundreds of private and municipal projects, including water supply, wastewater service, bridges, tunnels and highways. Tony continued as a Senior Project Engineer in construction and design and rose to the position of Senior Vice President. He also worked on major projects in Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Boston and New York. During "retirement" Tony continued to work to keep his mind active and be able to be around people.

He enjoyed his time at Clarke's Hardware of New London and The Fells in Newbury, NH before his health declined.

Tony was a sincere and kind human being who spent time with everyone talking about their passions and overlapping interests. He loved striking up a conversation with a stranger, always had compassionate comments and they inevitably walked away friends.

Tony's true passion was sailing. He spent many hours working on, designing and planning for projects for whichever sailboat he owned at the time. His concentration and passion for his hobby was always at the forefront of his days. He lived the mantra "Be here now". Whenever life removed the ability to sail on the water he sailed in his mind. There was nothing that he couldn't imagine, do or see when it came to sailboats, sails, rigging, building a bow or stern pulpit and any teak accessory you could imagine for a sailboat. Almost always, you would hear Jimmy Buffett playing in the background, not only because he loved the music, but because it so represented the sailing life he loved.

Tony also had a very keen interest in geography, mountains and mountain ranges, especially Kathmandu. He was fascinated with Mt. Everest, and envisioned attempting a climb. He named his most recent sailboat, Kathmandu.

Tony is survived by his wife Linda Timbrell of Newport, NH, his son Stefan Timbrell and wife Karen of New London, NH and his four grandchildren Connor Timbrell of San Diego, CA, Mackenzie Timbrell of Brooklyn, NY, Henry Timbrell and Max Timbrell of New London, NH, Stefan's mother Kathleen Belko of New London, NH, Tony's older brother Charles Timbrell and his partner William Kloss from Washington DC, his younger brother Philip Timbrell and wife Laureen of Hackettstown, NJ and their two children Sarah and Doug. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. If so inclined, please make a donation in Tony's name to the American Cancer Society.
