Jason Desrosiers Obituary

Jason R. Desrosiers

Lebanon, NH — Jason Robert Desrosiers, 40, passed away Friday, May 7, 2021 at his home in Lebanon after a brief illness. He was born in Plymouth, NH to Cliff and Susan (Couture) Desrosiers of Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School, class of 1998.

Jason was an adventurer at heart. When he was young, he spent most of his time at the stream and in the woods near his home. He loved discovering the nature around him. Jason was an avid reader at a young age and was often called "the little professor". When Jason was older, he used his debating skills to argue points in class, often to the dismay of his teachers. His sense of humor was infectious and his kindness to others was unsurpassed. Jason loved playing basketball and baseball and was a big fan of both the Boston Celtics and the Boston Red Sox. He spent many summers deep sea fishing with his dad and his brother, Jim. He was active in many LHS Drama productions and NCCT productions. He was a master Scrabble player, Jeopardy wiz and Star Trek connoisseur.

Jason attended Keene State College in hopes of becoming an English teacher, however, the open road beckoned to him. Jason left for Oregon in his Volkswagen Vanagon to travel and explore the country. When he returned to the Upper Valley, his new profession was as a cook, and he worked at a multitude of restaurants in the Upper Valley and Portsmouth area. Jason learned that the "The Triangle X Dude Ranch" in Moose, Wyoming needed a cook, and in typical "Jason the explorer" fashion, he headed off across the country once again. He would participate in pack rides at the Ranch leading a caravan of mules loaded with the week's rations and cooking supplies for their clients. Keeping himself and his cat safe from the grizzly bears was always a challenge. Jason spent ten years in Wyoming and finally decided that family was more important to him, and he moved back to Lebanon.

Jason developed an interest in mycology and began to study and focus his attention on the mushrooms of New Hampshire and Vermont. He belonged to several mushroom oriented groups and started his own edible mushroom business, "JRD Mushroom Company". He sold jars of mushroom medium used to grow edible/gourmet mushrooms to clients around the country. He often hiked the Storrs Hill area, seeking out edible and unusual mushroom varieties.

Jason left cooking behind and began working at Hanover Street School as a paraprofessional. He had finally found his calling, he was in love with teaching young children. He was dedicated to the job, working not only with his assigned students but the whole class. Jason took great pride in the amount of progress his students made over the course of the year. He ran the Homework Club in the afternoon and assisted with the Garden Club whenever possible. During the school's remote time and throughout the summer of 2020, he helped deliver meals to the families of the Lebanon School District. He never let his illness hold him back.

His favorite moments were spending time with his nieces, Olivia and Isla. He loved playing board games with them. He loved taking them on hikes, swimming in Great Brook, ambushing them with water blasters, reading stories, and cooking with them. He enjoyed watching his nieces perform in their dance recitals.

Jason is survived by his parents, Cliff and Susan Desrosiers of Lebanon, his brother Jim, his sister in-law, Cheryl, and their children, the loves of his life, his nieces Olivia and Isla Desrosiers of Dover, his aunts Linda and Julie Couture of Lebanon, his uncle and aunt, Bob and Terri Lee Couture of Lane, Kansas, cousins Ryan, Justin, and Devin Couture, and his cat, Speck. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Robert and Barbara Couture of Lebanon, Doris and Louis Desrosiers of Lawrence, MA and his aunts Gloria Desrosiers and Pauline Landry of MA.

"Death is that state in which one exists only in the memory of others, which is why it is not an end. No goodbyes, just good memories."

Services will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to The Jason Desrosiers Memorial Fund, c/o Mascoma Savings Bank, 67 North Park Street, Lebanon, NH 03766.

Dear Sue, Cliff and family... I am beyond saddened and shocked to hear of your greatest loss. My memories of Jason as a child was always having masking tape to hold his glasses together, being very funny and sweet as well as playing with Aerik, as kids, so goofy and at one birthday party cornering me in the garage while they held water balloons and the hose daring me to try to make to the house. He was a wonderful person and from what I have read turned into an awesome man. I cannot imagine your pain. I am so very sorry and will keep you in my prayers and hold you close in my heart. Judith

I am so so sorry to learn of Jason's passing. I had been taking a course with him in the spring this year. He had a great dry sense of humor that everyone enjoyed. It is nice to see his smiling face in the picture here. He often spoke about his students and how much he enjoyed his job and life. I miss you Jason.

Susan and Cliff, We were so very sad to hear that Jason passed away. What we remember most about him was his wonderful smile and friendly personality. It was quite a coincidence to read that Jason worked at the Triangle X Dude Ranch in Moose, WY because our son Justin spends a lot of time in Moose. It would have been nice if they had crossed paths there. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

My heart aches for this loss to the world. I worked with Jay at Triangle X for several years, and he was just the. best. He never got rattled in the kitchen, so one time when he told me we were out of green beans to serve the guests -- I demanded (as a mouthy server) that something else be provided because not all the tables got beans. Well, I think Jason threw a plate or yelled back at me or something -- because then we were all stunned that for the first time Jason got mad! The head cook named ME "Employee of the Month" because I had made the impossible happen - making kind Jay get upset! Jay knew it was really a tribute to him, who had got nearly the whole season cool as a cucumber in his work.

My favorite memories of Jason are walking the children to school together on Fridays since he joined HSS. His natural love of children shined brightest during these casual "Walk to school" walks from Colburn Park, through the village, and over the bridge to school. He was a gentle and friendly presence and will be dearly missed!

Jason is such a kind spirited person. His quiet nature, desire to learn, not afraid a challenge- all positive attributes. He cared deeply for his students and built wonderful rapport with them. Special Ed work seemed appropriate, as he understood personal struggle. Jason became a fixture at HSS as many before him and many to come. He will be held in memory with loving thoughts. To all of Jason’s loved ones,
I send my deepest sympathy to all that feel his loss. Jason’s love branched out far and wide and those of us that were blessed to experience it are better for it.
He shared his gifts and his love for nature with many different communities and enriched the learning experience for anyone that could use his guidance.
He gave freely. He was a trusted friend.
He will always be remembered with love and his memory and character will no doubt continue to inspire others.
I wish his family and everyone touched by him, comfort in your memories and special moments with him.
I send my love and gratitude.

So sorry to hear about Jason! Taken too soon and too young! Losing a son has got to be one of the hardest things to deal with in life. I was glad to hear about his work at Hanover Street school, that must've been nice for Sue.My thoughts and prayers are with you, Rick Stockwell

My son had Jason in his classroom last year, and I got to know him just a little bit when I volunteered in the classroom for the Four Winds nature program. He was impressive, to put it mildly - always there for the students, knowing how to help at any moment, encouraging and inspiring them to learn and do their best. My son often came home talking excitedly about things "Mr. D" had told him - about mushrooms, hiking, science, and more. We are saddened by this news, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.

Jason was a free spirit with a heart of gold. We have so many wonderful memories and feel a tremendous sense of loss. Since he was a classmate and friend of our son John, our paths often intersected, particularly with respect to his theater performances, which started with "Olympics of the Mind" skits, and as the "Royal Reader" in "Trial of Mother Goose." He was so intelligent and full of life.

Jason was such an all-around nice guy, and I never heard him complaining during his illness. I know everyone usually says this, but it is so true about Jason. His commitment to his students was evident by the very fact that, despite his failing health, he was by their side, helping and encouraging them. I am truly sorry for the grief and heartache Sue and the rest of Jason's family is experiencing right now, but am comforted by the knowledge that Jason was able to spend so much time with them for the past few years. I know they will forever cherish that time, and all of the wonderful memories that they have of him from the past forty years. May peace be with you all.

Cliff, Sue,Jim and family,
I want to express deepest and heartfelt sympathy to you all. After reading all Jason accomplished in his too short life, I'm not surprised at his wide interests. From his kindergarten days, I knew he'd give his all.
Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
