Elizabeth Hirsch Obituary

Elizabeth Ruth "Peggy" Hirsch, 97, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at St. Catherine Center in Waco. A private graveside service will be held in Marshall, Texas. Peggy was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Winnipeg, Canada, and moved to Santa Monica, Calif. at the age of six, following the death of her father. Peggy married Martin Weisman Hirsch, of Marshall, in 1934. They made Marshall their home with Martin joining the family business, Joe Weisman and Co. Peggy was active in numerous civic organizations in the Marshall community. After the death of her husband in 1968, Peggy remained in Marshall for 10 years until moving to Waco to be near her daughter, Sara Jo Englander, and her family. Soon after arriving in Waco, Peggy became active in the Hillcrest Auxiliary and stayed involved for 20 years. She was a member of Temple Rodef Sholom. Peggy loved her antiques, playing bridge and poker with her friends and always had a great sense of humor. Peggy was beautiful inside and out and never missed an opportunity to share her "Texas Trash" or "Peg Peg" brownies with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, E.R. and Sara Levinson; her husband, Martin Hirsch; and brothers, Curt Levinson and Dan Levinson. She is survived by her daughter, Sara Jo Englander and husband, Louis, of Waco; son, Jon Hirsch of Austin; grandsons, Woody Englander and wife, Ronda, of Austin, Marty Englander and wife, Marilyn, of Fort Worth, Michael Hirsch and wife, Kelly, of Spring and Shawn Hirsch and wife, Stephanie, of Cypress; great-grandchildren, Blair and Samuel Englander and Emily and Molly Englander. The family would like to thank Dr. Jim Copeland, the staff of St. Catherine, Providence Hospice and her wonderful caregivers, Sharon and Pat, and Visiting Angels, Jeanette, Evelyn and Doris. Donations can be made to the Trevor Romain Foundation, providing support and comfort to military families or to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas C/O The Waco Foundation. Dear Sara Jo and Louis, and Jon and families,
I'm sorry for your loss. I am a cousin from Chicago, and remember your mom fondly, from my visits to Marshall as a child and teen. She was Miss Hospitality. You mom showed us around, took us to her beautiful home.
My mother, Mariette, as a girl in the 1930s, used to take the train to Marshall (by herself) during the harsh winters and stay with the Marcuses, and was close at the time to Harry Jr, Martin and Joe.
My heart goes out to you all - your mom was so sweet.

Sara Jo,

I cannot believe your sweet mama lived such a wonderful, long life. What a blessing for her that she could have had such an active life in Waco with you, Louis, and the children close by. I remember her as being such a beautiful woman. I know you will miss her.

Much love to you and yours,
Patty (Hadlock) Ramsey
