Started reading his poetry in high school and college, mid to late 60's. Very much identified with "I Am Waiting" as guide to my younger universe. One of the great Beat Poets. He may be gone physically, but his legacy will live as long as people read.

I shouted "The World is a Beautiful Place to be Born Into . . ." to the accompaniment of jazz in high school English class in 1966. "Coney Island of the Mind" has been a beloved book ever since. Lawrence Ferlinghetti was one of my heroes and will be until the day I die. Thank you for being pure and honest, Mr. Ferlinghetti.

While living on Chestnut Street at Columbus , I practically spent all of my free time at City Lights and had the pleasure of meeting Lawrence on several occasions . North Beach was my stomping grounds in the 80's and 90's before moving to the Mission district .
Lawrence and the north beach scene was and still is outta sight .
The beatniks and the poets and the book stores and coffee shops make life interesting and worth living . RIP Lawrence . City Lights improved my life and sharpened my views .

Lawrence Ferlinghetti's contribution to poetry in America was immense and his defence of freedom of expression under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was historic. May his poetic soul rest in peace & joy.
