Woodrow Dvorak Obituary
BRAINARD – Woodrow A. Dvorak, 88, of Brainard, died May 16 at David Place in David City.
Dvorak was born May 27, 1918 to Frank A. and Josephine (Slama) Dvorak in rural Brainard. He attended District 46 near Brainard and was awarded an East Butler High School diploma as part of the United States Army Operation Recognition program, which honored young men who joined the military during World War II. He served in the United States Army from Feb. 14, 1941 until Dec. 1, 1945 in the 35th Division, Infantry and Military Police with overseas duty in Africa and the Mediterranean.
On June 16, 1942 he married Evelyn M. Hasik of Bruno in the Church of the Holy Angels in Los Angeles, Calif. The couple lived in Brainard all their lives where he worked with his brothers, Ray and Oscar, as parts manager for Ray's Oil Company.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard, a 63-year member of American Legion Post 273 and was awarded a life membership, and served as a past commander, was a 20-year member of the Volunteer Fire Department, serving as past chief, a member and officer of the Brainard Commercial Club, a member of the Village board and served as Mayor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Frank, Ray, Joseph and Oscar Dvorak, and sisters, Libby Dvorak and Hilda Dvorak Rezek.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Jim Hust of Lincoln; sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Pat Dvorak of Valparaiso and Gale and Kimi Dvorak of Lebanon, Ore.; grandchildren, Tracy Hust Richardson, Jeni Hust, Dawn Dvorak Fortik, Dana and Crystal Dvorak of Lincoln, Joe and Abbe Dvorak and Anna Dvorak Benson of Albany and Lebanon, Ore.; 10 great-grandchildren, Jay Richardson, Samantha, Danielle and Allysia Dvorak, Grant Dvorak, Izak and Evan Benson, Jacob, Cody and Jasmine Dvorak; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held May 19 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard with Father Matthew Eickhoff officiating. Burial was at Holy Trinity Cemetery at Brainard.
Pallbearers were Ron Dvorak, Jason Fortik, Dana Dvorak, Jerry Meister, Jerry Dexter and Larry Dauel.
Honorary pallbearers were Tracy Hust Richardson, Jeni Hust, Dawn Dvorak Fortik, Crystal Dvorak, Joe Dvorak, Anna Dvorak Benson and Abbe Dvorak.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 273, Holy Trinity Catholic Church and to the family.
Holesovsky Mortuary of Brainard was in charge of the arrangements.
