ALAN DONALD MIGHELL (Age 86)  
Passed on Wednesday, April 8, 2021, of Rockville, MD. He is the beloved husband of 58 years Anna Dekonschin Mighell; dear father of Dr. Mark Alan (Saskia) Mighell and Gregory Ronald Mighell; loving grandfather of Natasha, Chase, and Isabella Mighell; brother of Edwin Ronald Mighell and the late Ruth M. Weller. Alan is also survived by many more loving relatives and friends. Alan played the flute in the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra. He was in the Montgomery Blair High School Band and played at Eisenhower's inauguration. He won a scholarship for his flute playing, but then decided to go into science. He received a BS and an MS in chemistry from George Washington University and then went on to Princeton University where he received his Ph.D. His specialty was X-Ray crystallography. He worked for the federal government at NIST for over 50 years. He went on many international trips with the American Crystallographic Association. He won a silver medal in 1975 for his work in crystallography. He published about 100 scientific papers. He loved nature and animals he loved to hike the C & O Canal. He rescued five cats and three dogs. He helped with the Boy Scouts and went on many camping trips. He was a season ticket holder at the Kennedy Center for the National Symphony for many years. He met his wife Anna when they both were at GW. He proposed after dating two weeks. A graveside service will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Shriner's Hospital for Children at donate.lovetotherescue.org. or the charity of your choice.
