I think of Dr.Powers often and believe God guided me to Dr. Powers. Dr.Powers saw how bad my condition was and operated on me less than 24 hours after examining me. I had been writing in vain for other specialists to take me seriously (8 months) and was rapidly losing control over my arms. The last neurologist that examined me couldn´t get me in for 6 weeks, but Dr. Powers recognized I was going to be permanently disabled and rescued me. I was immediately better post surgery and shortly went back to my veterinary clinic able to practice once again. My heart aches whenever I think that this great man, so humble, so great a neurosurgeon, is no longer with us but I take solace in the fact he had already completed the work he had to do on this earth and God called him home. So may God bless you Dr. Powers, I will never forget you.

I was very sad to learn that Dr. Powers passed away. He did my first back surgery in 2004. He was very personable and easy to talk to about the challenges with my back. I just found out that he was gone and will never be able to replace him. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

In reading so many messages below, no words can even match the countless "lives" that Dr. Powers touched and healed. It is remarkable that he achieved so much in his short span of life. May God provide peace and solace to his family members.

As the expression goes "time flies", yet memories remain, and I cherish every moment I got to spend with Dr. Powers. In each of our lives we might encounter people, who make a profound impact, Dr. Powers in my life is one those individuals, a person who made me smile. May God bless his family.

I had a herniated disc and was admitted to Sibley Hospital. Lucky for me, Dr. Powers was the neurosurgeon on duty. He performed a laminectomy and I never again had any pain. He was the best neurosurgeon and person I've ever met. We joked about his being from Pittsburgh as I was born about 40 miles north of there. He had all of the qualities of the best of the best doctors (neurosurgeons). I am deeply saddened to just learn of his death and send belated condolences to his family. I am honored to have been one of his patients. Rest in peace Dr. Powers.

As I sit at my desk and write my personal statement for physician assistant (PA) school, I am reminded of why I wanted to pursue medicine. When I was 13 years old, I had a serious back injury, for which I became a patient of Dr. Powers. Amidst apathetic surgeons and specialists, Dr. Powers was warm, calm, caring, and the only doctor who took the time to describe what was wrong with me and how he was going to fix me. He was the best doctor I ever had and is the reason why I want to be a healthcare provider. I miss him terribly.

Doc Powers was more then just my doctor. He made me feel like a old friend on my pre and post op visits. He was famous for taking his time to hear everything you had to say all the time smiling and carefully listening to you. You knew you were in the best possible hands with him. We didn't just lose a incredible doctor. We lost a extremely companionate man.. It just is not fair..

I often think of Dr. Alex & my friend Dr. Robert Millman, who also fell asleep with the Lord some 20 years earlier of the same illness. Both were of the same doctoral practice: patients first. May Dr. Powers’ memory be eternal.

Late 1999 DEC - Jan 2000 my landlord & her main/man carried me from my bed and dropped me off at WHC. Before wheeling me into the operating room he alone came out to hold my hand and talk to me about the situation I was in. We both decided that everything would be ok. We both smiled and went happily into surgery. When I woke up I immediately knew I would walk again! I was able to wiggle my toes! The progression quickly went up my legs and torso! I walked out of the hospital! I have bragged on my Doctor to everyone even other Doctors, I have /and will always credit Dr.Powers for literally saving my life. If what I feel at this moment is love then I guess I love this guy. Thanx Doc I’m gonna miss you.

Alex was a wonderful brother in law that cared about me as well as my family. I struggled for a full year with some mental health issues and Alex was there sometimes daily to talk to me, explain things and help me work through the medications as well as other options that would help me. He was the most humble man i knew and sincerely cared for others. Alex was funny and lit up the room when he was in it. Not only did Alex help me through a very difficult time but he offered answers and guidance during a horrific time for my sister and her husband that had brain cancer. Alex asked about him, checked up on him and read X rays to again offer support and answers. I will miss him very much and know that he will always be watching over his family from above. I was always proud to say that he was apart of my family.

With love,

Jill

It was a terrible shock to hear of Dr. Powers untimely passing. Though I was a patient of his, it feels more like the passing of a close friend or family member. He has been a positive presence in my life every single day after he did major and very successful surgery through the length of my lumbar spine, including a walnut size tumor on one of my nerves. His immense skill was essential to my being functional physically today. But I feel the loss so strongly for much more than that. On every visit he had the time to answer every question and talk about family. I never felt rushed or that he had another appointment after me though, of course, he always did. Given the nature of the surgery and the risks, I was nervous; my wife, who generally accompanied me on these pre-op visits, told me she was confident all would go well because Dr. Powers took so much pride in his work and the relationships he had with his patients. It is a great loss. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I only saw Dr. Powers once after struggling to find a doctor who would listen to and take seriously my back problems. I so appreciated the time he spent with me listening and explaining. This is so rare and so necessary in physicians. I was saddened to hear of his passing. He is certainly a loss to his patients and his family. My condolences.

Saddened to hear of Dr. Powers passing. He treated me 5 years ago and performed surgery on my back. Prayers for him, his family and those who have the task of filling his shoes.

Dr Powers had a 6 week waiting time for consultations, and was never on time, but which doctor is ? This was probably just the consequence of the enormous demands on his tremendous skills and abilities, and it is with a smile that I evocate this. I was shocked to receive MedStar's letter announcing his passing. Like many others, I benefited from a very successful surgery (3 level cervical vertebrae fusion) which changed my life, 18 months ago. There was a very particular, fun and human side in the interaction with him, which I have rarely found with practitioners of that level. I was going about to consult him again for a lower back problem, and I selfishly wish I had tried earlier. My respectful and grateful thoughts go to him, may he rest in peace.

It has been several days since I came to know about the tragic loss, passing of Dr. Powers. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Powers for healing my parents spinal problems and providing advise to me regarding my neck and back issues. I have known Dr. Powers over 15 years, his work and his life is like a bright shinning star, that will eternally illuminate, embodied by his encouraging, kind and caring qualities. He and I were about the same age, and as I continue on with life's journey, it gives me solace in thought that when faced with a challenge, I will ask what would Dr. Powers want me to do? And yes, his eternal strength serves as a beacon for all us to achieve the highest potential that God has graced us in our life.

My husband and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Powers. He was, by far, the best doctor we have ever known. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family. He will be sorely missed in this world.

I just read the letter informing me of the death of a truly wonderful doctor, compassionate surgeon and kind man. I feel devastated and sad but that cannot compare to the feelings of his family and friends, so I am praying for them. He performed surgery on my back in 2008 that was life-changing. He came into pre-op and saw that I was shaking in fear so he stayed to walk my gurney to the operating room and continued talking to distract me until the anesthesiologist put me to sleep. During my postop visit he laughed about the 2 page letter of thanks that I sent him, especially because my saying that I felt so much better was only mentioned in the last sentence. When I returned in 2018 with more back issues, he explained everything and then told me that it was all right to try other alternatives until I was mentally ready for surgery. He was so kind and caring and patient. I regret that I procrastinated too long. The smile in the picture above perfectly shows his ready smile that always reached his eyes. I will greatly miss you, Dr Powers, and I will pray for your happiness in the arms of God.

I was deeply saddened to hear that Dr. Power's is gone from this earth; his legacy will never end... My heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his loved ones. The quote below is from a letter I wrote for Dr. Power's; I am truly blessed to have known him...
"I am sitting here pensively as the morning sun rises through a window of my happy place, and a tear quietly seeped from my weary eye, what invades my thoughts is knowing what a rare and exceptional person and neurosurgeon you are.

You have a degree higher than doctorates. This degree doesn't require you to take exams or write lengthy research papers or to defend or prove your position. Nor do you receive with this degree an official, state-sealed diploma to hang on the wall with your other life-long accomplishments. This innate degree you possess enables you to combine all of your experiences and knowledge to become a Healer of a patient's body, mind, and spirit too.

This is what you did for me, Dr. Powers, by treating me with concern, compassion, realism, and going several extra arduous miles to help me to diminish my chronic debilitating pain. My overwhelming medical complications never deterred you. For ten long years, no matter how many disappointments there were, you never gave up on me!
I believed with every breath that I took that one day, this day would come, and I would be able to say, THIS IS WHY I NEVER GAVE UP!

For all the days of my life, you will have a home in my heart,"
Rest in peace buddy... Kellie Flor Robinson

I just receive this letter in the mail today and with great sadness my heart broke and burst into tears in disbelief. He is one of the greatest surgeons filled with compassion and love in helping spinal cord injuries have the chance of a normal life. Dr. Powers you gave us the greatest gift anyone person could receive you always gave us HOPE and belief in the impossible, your laughter will be missed always. Our heart and prayers are with your family, we will miss you Dr. Powers thank you for always being there to help us.

Dr. Powers literally saved my neck. I was in desperate need of a cervical laminectomy to relieve pressure on my spinal cord that could have resulted in permanent, severe damage. Dr. Powers moved heaven and earth to see that I got my surgery the next morning after having my first meeting with him. Had he not moved so quickly, I would have been permanently disabled and would have to give up my veterinary practice. Thanks to Dr. Powers and his exemplary surgical skills, I am still able to practice veterinary medicine today some 3 years post-surgery. I feel the world lost a great man and blessed that this wonderful human being was my surgeon.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Dr.Powers passing. He was absolutely a top notch wonderful surgeon and a caring person. I was unable to walk due to intense pain & he performed back surgery in 2017. He always was conscientious to keep in touch with my pain management specialist and neurologist. He never rushed his patients and was always honest. He did surgery on several friends my church and was liked by all. My heartfelt prayers go to his wife and family. May God comfort you at this time.

I'm sitting here in tears and absolute disbelief. I, too, received the letter today about Dr. Powers' passing. I had just returned from PT as I'm still recovering from my multilevel fusion and decompression that Dr. Powers performed on me July 24th. He put me at ease from my first appointment back in March, up to the day of surgery. I will never forget how he came bouncing in to the pre-op area waving at me and making me laugh. He changed my life and the life of so many others with his gift. I will forever be grateful. May he rest in peace knowing how many lives he touched. Sending love and light to his family and all who knew him........

I just returned from my overseas trip and was scheduled to meet Dr Powers on Nov 14 Th.. Received call From his office informing the shocking news, I have not been able to get over it, his smiling face is flashing all times. In Sept 2019 my last apt he joked that he had cut down on his daily apts. as per his doctors advice but never imagined that was the last time I will see him. A fantastic doctor and human being. May his soul Rest In Peace.

I must have been in the last group of patients he helped in May.
When I called his office Nov, 4 and they told me he had passed away I shrieked. No!!! He was a genius but humble and compassionate. His waiting room was filled with people who traveled from far away just to see him. So I told him he was a rock star-his eye twinkled and said he would tell his children .
So much talent. His time on earth gave joy and comfort.
My sympathy to his family.

I just today received a letter informing me of Dr. Powers passing in October.

I have only known Dr. Powers since he did surgery on my lower back in 2016. But, what a gifted man. His caring personality and time he spent informing me of my condition, and how he was going to fix it has never been forgotten. Not many doctors spend much time with you like they used to do and to detail what they were going to do to fix it.

His smile, his eyes and his enthusiasm about what he does gave you additional calm when you realized what was ahead and that the doctor doing the surgery is really vested in your total recovery.

My husband remembers his coming out after the surgery to take the time to speak to him & reassure him I was OK.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family in this period of grief. But, in that grief I hope they realize what an impact he had on so many to make their lives so much better. I only wish the medical community could have saved his life that he could continue helping others in their hour of need.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of a truly gifted physician.

Dr. Powers performed two major surgeries on me, the first on my back and a later one on my neck. He was not only a supremely skilled neurosurgeon but a compassionate person as well. When he saw my name on the surgical roster just prior to my surgery for an entirely different part of my body, he came into my preop room and sat with me for twenty minutes expressing his concern and support. He was so kind, so highly skilled and so positive in his outlook. His premature death is a tremendous loss to his family, his patients and the medical community.

My deepest sympathy to Alex's family for his loss. He was a fantastic man and phenomenal surgeon. His ready smile and wonderful sense of humor will be missed. He performed 7 lumbar surgeries on me over the past 18 years and always made time for a little chit chat. The team of Alex, Sara, Celeste, and Mo had to be present for the slicing and dicing. I was so heartbroken when I heard about Dr. Powers passing. He was not only the best neurosurgeon, but he was also a very kind and compassionate man. I saw him in 2001 for a severe neck injury which required surgery. He explained exactly what he needed to do and put my mind at ease. If it had not been for him and his excellent skills, I would be paralyzed today. RIP Dr. Powers, you will be greatly missed.

Dr.Powers twinkling eyes, sparkling smile and gifted hands gave me the ability to regain mobility in my life and thrive. Recommended by Dr. Arvanagi, a renown Pain Management specialist, I went to see Dr Powers. Upon arrival, I had no feeling in foot ( rendering no driving), inability to write, cut food, comb hair, button anything, and dropping everything. Dr. Powers took one look at MRI and said, I will perform surgery tomorrow. Two rupture disks on neck can paralyze. Dr Powers operated and week by week those nerve endings grew back to full functioning in hand and foot. Pretty amazing magic from this amazing surgeon. I know he gave to hundreds of patients the ability to rise up everyday and chase the good life.
I send comfort and sincere condolences to Dr. Powers beloved family and dear friends for the loss of this special man. God bless!

I never met Dr Powers, but as a physical therapist I saw literally hundreds of his patients over 20+ years. From his patients, I learned what a smart, compassionate and skilled surgeon he was. He was patient, listening to patients stories, offering sound medical advice. I referred patients to him for a thorough assessment of their disorder/ pain/ injury. They all reported that no matter how many weeks they had to wait to see Dr Powers, it was a worthwhile and informative visit. He effected the lives of so many people in such a positive way. We will greatly miss Dr Power's wisdom and skill at work. It is of course in no way comparable to the void he leaves for his family. You have my prayers
