I had the privilege of serving as General Chambers' legal advisor when he served as the National Director of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). The fact that we were both retired Army officers helped to solidify our relationship and enabled us to be a great team. He cared about people (especially the "little guy"), and was a leader who exhibited impeccable qualities as a man of excellence! I treasure our time together, and pray for his family as they mourn his passing!

In the summer of 1982 then MG Chambers was the Commanding General of the First Cavalry Division, and he was the key note speaker of the closing banquet of the First Cavalry Division Association reunion in Washington DC. Almost all attendees were WWII vets and a few Korean War vets, but MG Chambers asked all Vietnam Vets to come to the dais for a picture at the conclusion of the evening. There were seven of us in the picture with him on that night.
I took that picture to Ft. Hood with me last week as we celebrated the Association's 70th reunion. There was one WWII vet and a few Korean War vets there. About 98% were Vietnam vets. I look back with much pride that he would single us out at a time when being a Vietnam veteran was not very popular.
For the remainder of his time commanding the Cav, I considered him a good friend.

LTG Chambers was truly a great American hero! I loved him both as a mentor and fraternity Brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He will be sorely missed! My prayers and condolences to his wonderful family! May God watch over him as he enters to the Kappa Chapter Invisible!
