Ann Hicks Obituary

HICKS

ANN MARIE HICKS

Ann Marie Hicks, Catholic educator, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and community activist, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2022 from Alheizmer's disease.

"Her faith was her life and her life was her faith," said her friends. Mrs. Hicks served over 40 years in many leadership roles at the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA), which provides emergency social services for low income families. She was also active with St. Anthony's R.C. Church, where she served on the school board, and as a Eucharistic minister.

An alumnus of Misericordia and George Mason Universities, Mrs. Hicks taught biology at Bishop O'Connell High School from 1991 to 2003, where she was also Chair of the science department.

She was born Ann Marie Wysocki, in Plains, Pennsylvania, on April 22, 1943.

In 1965, she said "Yes!" to a marriage proposal from Norman Lee Hicks, after dating him for only three weeks. Their marriage lasted 56 years.

In 1967, her young husband Norman received a job offer to work in development with USAID. He asked her if she was willing to relocate to Ghana. She said, "Yes! Where is it?" She went on to teach in West Africa, and became one of the founding teachers at The Lincoln School, which is still thriving today.

She is survived by her husband, Norman Hicks; her daughters Lee Ann (Bruce) MacNeil and Mary Beth (Carlos) Holloway; her two sons, Sander and Kenneth Hicks; and eight grand-children.

"The Holy Spirit has always been a part of my life," Ann Marie told Misericordia University in 2015, when she was honored as keynote speaker at the annual Convocation Ceremony.

She advised the incoming freshmen, "I can tell you, if you look for a way to respond to those in need, you will find the secret to a happy life."

The viewing will take place on Friday, November 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, November 26, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Everly Funeral Home, 6161 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22041. A Mass of Chrisian burial will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church 3505 Glen Carlyn Rd., Falls Church VA, followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery, 401 N. Roosevelt St., Falls Church. You are all invited to a reception at the Everly Funeral Home after the interment.

I miss your smile. You were an angel on earth. I am raising funds for St. Josephine Bakhita statue at St. Thomas More cathedral. Mr. Hicks donated, but i said, Mrs. Hicks would have given me more. Hahahaa!
Rest in peace, you kind-hearted angel. I put your prayer card on the remembrance table at St. Anthony last Sunday.

Thank you for your kindness, Mrs. Hicks. I will never forget your beautiful smile. you recognized me anytime you received the Eucharist and returning to your pew, you always smiled at me and held my hand for a while. You helped get financial assistance for my friends from ACCA. Thank you for caring. I will remember you, in my sleep and in my sleepless sleep. May perpetual light shine on you, rest in peace.

AnnMarie was a beloved teacher and colleague, and will be dearly missed by those whose lives she touched. I had the privilege of being Norm´s Spanish instructor at the World Bank, where I worked for eight years, and Anne Marie´s colleague at Bishop O´Connell later on in my career. Though we list touch, they both hold a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with Ann Marie, Norm and the entire Hicks family.

Mrs. Hicks was an amazing biology teacher. I will never forget her AP Bio class on 9/11. She took such good care of us, keeping us informed and loving and supporting us on a day that was terrifying and emotional for all of us. Every other day her class was amazing, probably my favorite in high school. To this day even though I didn't pursue a career in science, I love it and feel being science literate helps me every day.

I´ve only known Ann Marie and Norman since they moved into Goodwin House. Despite her illness, Ann Marie´s giving spirit glowed from within her. Her smile brought joy to many. That spirit will live on through all of you and through the many people whose lives were influenced by her. My deep sympathy.

Dear Norman and family,

We are so sorry to learn of Ann Marie´s illness and passing. We have such wonderful memories of Ann Marie from many summers with the swim teams as well as many vibrant conversations related to her life outside of swimming. Ann Marie truly lived her faith, and may her memory be a blessing certainly to her wonderful family and to the many whom she encountered in her years of teaching and of service to those in need.

In deepest sympathy...
