Avis Robinson Obituary

ROBINSON

AVIS COLLINS ROBINSON

The artist, environmentalist, collector and advocate Avis Collins Robinson passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Eugene Robinson; her sons, Aaron and Lowell; her grandchildren, Alice and Malcolm; her daughter-in-law, Maureen; her sister, Kirsten; her foster brothers, Harold and Donald Miles; loving nieces and nephews; and an indelible legacy of creativity and compassion.

Avis was born on July 26, 1953, in Baltimore, MD, the daughter of Annie Ruth (nee Brown) and Edward Rhodes Collins. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Cross in 1971 and received her B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1974. She later earned two master's degrees, the first from Golden Gate University and the second, an M.P.A., from Harvard University in 1988.

Avis had three stellar careers. She worked for more than 20 years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where she did early work on climate change, coordinated with governments in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and advocated for environmental justice. In 2003, she left the EPA to devote all of her energies to Washington Metropolitan Scholars, an non-profit organization she founded to connect 50 of the nation's leading universities with low-income, high-achieving minority students in the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area. Through Avis's tireless efforts, WMS provided college access and financial aid to more than 1,000 young men and women. During these phases of her life, Avis also assembled a large and important collection of African American historical artifacts and documents. Items she donated are on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

In her deepest essence, however, Avis was always an artist. Her talent and skill could no longer be held back, and in 2008 she began pouring all of her time and effort into painting and fabric art. She received validation a year later when her portrait of Abraham Lincoln was chosen as the single iconic representation of the great president in the newly renovated lobby of Ford's Theatre, where Lincoln was slain. Wider recognition quickly followed. She had a residency and two one-woman shows of paintings and abstract quilted fabric works at the Studios of Key West in Florida. In 2022, she had a one-woman show at the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. The National Gallery of Art has acquired one of her fabric pieces, "Black Hands Moving Colors," for its collection. The Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies has permanently installed Avis's quilted works at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York, the U.S. Embassy in London and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. FAPE recently commissioned Avis to create eight major fabric pieces for the planned new U.S. Embassy in Hanoi â€" and has pledged that the project will be completed, and Avis's vision realized, according to her designs. At the time of her death, Avis was also completing a project for The Washington Post in which she created new quilted fabric pieces, and wrote accompanying essays, to herald the four seasons.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 11, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 12319 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD., 20904. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Private interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Monday, November 13.

To Eugene Robinson and family. I am sorry to have just found out about your lovely wife's passing. I always admired the artwork of the soldiers behind you when you were commenting from home during Covid. I did some research and found out your wife was the artist!!!
After watching you on MSNBC for years, one can start to feel a kinship.
I pray that as the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of God, family and friends.

Dear Mr. Robinson,

I worked with Avis at EPA. I want to say to you and the family-that we haven´t lost Avis-because when you lose somebody you don´t know where they are-we know where Avis is-she´s resting in the arms of her Heavenly Father Jesus Christ.

Worked with Avis for her graphic presentations and scholarship program for my students at church, "success stories all around."

To Mr. Robinson: I have had the supreme pleasure of reading your op-eds in the Post for...forever, I think, & watching you on MSNBC. Today, I read your beautiful, touching column about Avis´ death & her art. I was heartbroken. For Avis´ untimely death, & for your loss of your wife of 45 years. I can only imagine the crushing grief you´ve been going through. The sole comfort I can offer is my certainly that there are thousands of folks like me who care for you & your family as you navigate this time of great loss; I envision the energy of this deep sympathy exploding into a great & warm light, making its way to each of you, enveloping you a blanket of healing.

My condolences to the Robinson/Collins family. Avis and I crossed paths while working at the USEPA and there was never an engagement that her intelligence, kindness and just overall good spirit were not on display. Her boys were always tops in the things she would share as a friend. I missed Avis when she went on to greater things in her life. So grateful to have had the experience.

Felice Robinson, Washington, DC

Hi Mr. Robinson, Please know how grateful we are that Mrs. Robinson's path crossed with that of our family's. My daughter graduated from Oberlin College in no small part due to Mrs. Robinson's benevolence. Truly a loving soul. Please accept our sincere condolences. Patience Robinson Orlando, WMS '05, daughter Fatima and, most graciously, Felice Robinson, grateful mother.

Gene - The last time Avis and I spoke was probably 5-6 years ago. Even though we hadn´t been in the same place at the same time in decades, we shmoozed up a storm, and I felt enveloped in her big, warm, joyous personality. She brought beauty to the world with her art and filled any space she occupied with light. Regaining equilibrium after your world flipped upside down will be a challenge, but please know that your many friends and admirers wish you strength and comfort.

Dear Eugene,
It's Fran, an old friend of Avis's from University of Maryland. We lived on the same floor in La Plata Hall. After you left SF, we somehow lost touch with one another. (This photo was taken in SF, August 1979. You and Avis came over to David and my home in Noe Valley for a get together . The other people in the photo are friends of ours (we're not in the photo). ) I have been thinking of Avis a lot lately, and have been trying to locate her for years. I thought I contacted you at the Post 5 or so years ago, but got a response it was the wrong Eugene Robinson. Finally, when I googled Avis early this week, it came up with the link to her obituary. I was devastated . So bizarre, that I finally found her, and it was too late. I am so very sorry your loss- my memories of Avis and are times together are vivid. She was smart, fun to be with, beautiful and had a great spirit. I was thrilled to see all that she had accomplished in her shortened life- you and your sons must be very proud. My heart is with you, your family, and all of Avis's loved ones. May her memory continue to bring light into your life.
With sympathy & warm regards,
Fran (Meckler)

I went to high school with Avis, where we became friends. My parents were liberal about interracial relationships and friendships so she was always welcome at my house. We enjoyed lots of good times together and never lost that connected feeling. It is such a tragedy to lose her so early, especially since she had a long list of things still to do.

My favorite memory of Avis was speaking in Spanish with her while discussing our favorite music. she wanted suggestions.

Avis is unforgettable because of her approachability and her kindness. She really was brilliant and yet so humble. Just saw in the news also how talented she was in the arts. I was so taken aback by the beautiful images.

Que disfrutes en el cielo amiga!

I worked with Avis at EPA. I was in pursuit of some data and someone who knew about EPA's waste program. A friend introduced me to Avis. Avis dropped everything to help me, including phoning her contacts and setting me up with meetings. I remember being so touched and impressed. That was the start of a longer partnership working on climate change and economics.
