BARBARA SLAVIN Obituary

SLAVIN BARBARA ROSE SLAVIN (nee VALLIN) Longtime Anchin Pavilion resident Barbara Rose Slavin, nee Vallin, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, June 2, 2014. Mrs. Slavin was well known on the Kobernick-Anchin campus and will be remembered for her colorful pastel outfits, extensive collection of hats, wit, charm and grace. Born in Washington, DC, the daughter of Alma and Joseph Vallin, Mrs. Slavin received her teaching certificate shortly after her graduation from Wilson College and began teaching English at Alice Deal Junior High School. In 1949 she met and married Benjamin Slavin, who had recently moved to Washington, DC. They began their marriage in a small apartment in the city, then moved to the newly developing suburb of Silver Spring, MD. In the mid 60's, as the family expanded and Mr. Slavin's construction business flourished, Mr. Slavin built a custom designed home in Bethesda, MD where they lived until their retirement to Sarasota in 1983. While living up North, the Slavin's were involved in and helped to support many social, political and Jewish organizations and causes. Here in Sarasota, Mr. and Mrs. Slavin continued their cultural interests and philanthropic endeavors by being active in the Sarasota Opera, Jewish Housing Council (Kobernick-Anchin), Ringling College of Art and Design, Selby Gardens, Mote Marine and many other non-profit organizations. The Slavin's enjoyed experiencing other cultures, which led to many years of world travel. They were married for 54 years until his passing in 2003 at age 84 Mrs. Slavin was the beloved mother of Jan Michele Griffith (Martin) of Minneapolis, MN, James Michael (Michele) Slavin of Sarasota, FL and Jonathan Mark Slavin (Yorly) of San Jose, CA and a loving grandmother to granddaughters Karin and Julia, Miranda and Valintina. She is also survived by a her sister, Patricia Reidmiller of Sarasota, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and devoted caregivers. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph M Vallin. A Celebration of her Life is being planned for a later date. Interment private. Jan, Jimmy and Jonathan, We were so sorry that we lost contact with your parents in Sarasota many years ago. Besides being almost like family 60 years ago in Washington when Barbara, Patsy and Joe lived on 333rd Street, I think I may have had your mother as an English teacher in one of her first classes at Deal. Arnie and I will be in Sarasota the last week in June and would love to be in touch with you at that time. We do have so many memories of your family, long ago and also in the less distant past. We are sorry for your loss. Arnold and Bette Gichner Hoffman.
